I dunno I’m only on Into the Everflow

I might like it more than A Social Grace though

Listened to this once through, and I loved it. The riffs here are awesome (Sisters of the Dawn, uh muh god) and the prog curveballs like the pan flute in Pull The String and Demystified are sheer genius. This is exactly the style of music I was hoping for when I saw the album cover and listened to the lead single (Devils and Angels). The vocals hit that sweet spot where they're rough enough to convey power, but versatile enough to hit those high notes that go so well with said prog moments. The vocalist reminds me of someone but I can't pinpoint who it is. This is my first Psychotic Waltz album which I realize puts me in a weird minority, but I was thoroughly impressed. One thing I didn't pay much attention to on the first go-around was the lyrics, but my expectations for great lyrics from metal is pretty low in the first place, which might just be because I haven't heard very many superior wordsmiths from metal/prog. Excited to keep spinning this and see where it ends up. Regardless, the high praise from the review seems absolutely warranted. Lack of my own personal context aside, I can't imagine this being a letdown.

Not even worried about that when I'm just getting around to this. I want to let it sink in.

I'm not big on backtracking into discogs anyway unless I fall head over heels for an artist and every little thing about their sound.

Also great review, minor typo: That’s why it’s so awesome that Psychotic Waltz have return

Sorry guys I'm with oltna on this one, I really don't know what this does that hasn't been done better a thousand times over. I suppose it doesn't help that I'm not huge on this flavor of prog; maybe it's just not for me.

@sowingseason "but my expectations for great lyrics from metal is pretty low in the first place"

Yeah metal lyrics are usually pretty bad, especially prog. Even when well-written, I feel like they usually fall under one of these:

1) Ty to fit a big narrative into them and feel forced and bloated (Ayreon).

2) Very abstract ideas, which can work but usually I don't care about them besides atmosphere building (Cynic)

3) Are so obvious in the meaning, which can be charming but wouldn't get a an A+ for writing (Metallica)

I'd argue though, that in average, metal lyrics are no worse than most genres of music in terms of quality. And there are some excellent writers too: DsO, Primordial, Fates Warning, etc.

--Their album art always has me expecting thrashy tech death but then it’s basically just Dream Theater--

A more blantanly obvious example of someone that has no idea what they're talking about has never been seen...

--butt rock masquerading as prog metal--

... until this guy said, "Hold My Beer."

--I was exhausted by the end of this.--

That could be good or bad.

@SowingSeason: Thanks for checking it out, and also for leaving such a detailed opinion. I thought you might like this, but it's metal so I'm never sure. The lyrics on this album are definitely above average, too.

If you're not really into this style of prog, then there's almost no way this album could do anything other than remind you of all the other prog albums of this style that you've never really enjoyed or paid attention to. This album definitely has its own style and atmosphere that isn't generally touched on by other prog bands. But I get it, it would be like me trying to figure out the difference between one indie band and the next... what is really different between the two? What makes one better than the other? I have no idea...

What don't you like about it? Because even if you think it's their worst, that doesn't really explain a '2'. That just means you think this is bad, which would be odd if you were a fan of the other four albums. This is also the only PW album you have rated.

Don't really know how this would be a major step down from their previous records. Most of the bridges and solo's on here could be straight of The Bleeding and I wouldn't really notice.

That's what I'm saying. If you were a fan of the previous releases (especially the last two), there's literally nothing on this that should make you give it a '2'.
