I think the psychedelic aspect is misleading - there's nothing particularly psychedelic about this in a musical sense; and in terms of their aura and lyricism it's always been esoteric and cosmological.

I was pleasantly surprised by the direction they took with this album after becoming a bit jaded with their dissonant material (altho such experimentation is a signature of their career) - I agree that overall it fell short of being this completely transcendental odyssey which it was clearly intended to be. Still an enjoyable album though.

is 777 trilogy really the thing this group is most well known for? I would've thought memoria vetusta or The work which transforms god, but you could be right.

this would've had 15 pages' worth of comments on the day of release back in 2011

That must have been a good time. Seems only bigger bands get that much now

BAN get my vote for most consistent and consistently great metal band over the last three decades.

Who would others champion?

No ‘80s output allowed and they have to be about as prolific as BAN, no five or less album discographies

I was going to throw Neurosis at you but then realised their debut came out in '87

No, they count, just not that album

Good call - I still have four of their albums I haven’t listened to yet

I’d say Neurosis maybe haven’t released anything too exciting this decade from what I’ve listened to is the only black mark, where BAN have released at least two more than great albums each of the three decades

Guess it's a good thing, because that one is probably their worst

BAN I would probably nominate for the most versatile metal band

They've done so many different variations of black metal successfully, more so than any other band within the genre

Yeah that first Neurosis album is almost punk right? Hardcore influence anyway.

Sort of like it but good thing they moved quickly on from it.

'Pain of Mind' is better than their last 2 releases, it's overshadowed somewhat by 'The Word is Law' though, the latter is good enough to stand toe-to-toe with a portion of their discog - such an under-appreciated record. Of course I would never disagree that it's a good thing they moved on from that early crust sound, considering what they went on to achieve. One of the greatest discogs.

As for this, I've heard it twice - not formed a solid opinion one way or the other yet, leaning towards 'perfectly OK' but nothing more.

This is definitely one of my favorite BM albums from this year for sure along with Forgotten Paths.
