Anyone else feeling melancholy that this stylism of metalcore is considered safe nowadays? If Atonement dropped 10 years ago it would've blown our minds. Not to say music can't be criticised for lacking, but we need to be more explicit in defining what constitutes as originality and freshness in metal. Too many comments read as if they're saying "I'd know it when I hear it". Really? What is "IT" then?! This is where I give the proverbial: You go try it and come back with sometime better. But that's not entirely fair either. We judge bands like Killswitch based on past performance and proven abilities, not our own skills. This is where we come to a place of either 1) Very few can objectively critique music (metal) 2) Everyone should critique music because we all reflect a unique listening experience 3) What the hell even is music. I'm in camp 3.

if atonement was released ten years ago, it would have been an even worse follow-up to three near classic metalcore albums that their second self-titled was

I agree KSE's first three albums were phenomenal. But in a "taste test" scenario of comparing those albums to Atonement, I fail to hear a discrepancy wide enough to consider Atonement awful side-by-side. Definitely not genre-defining in today's market as they were 10 years ago but still enjoyable.

Yeah, I get what you're saying but (for me) there is a severe lack of subtleties and intricacies that made their first three so good. Not only that, but I just don't feel the material is up to snuff. The riffs feel powerless and repetitive. The hooks just aren't there. The production is **fine** but doesn't really do the music any favors. Only really solid thing going on is the percussion at this point.

A melodic metalcore album in 2019 devoid of any unique or interesting or even memorable aspects? Imagine my shock
