"Pitchfork are on it this year, credit where it is due, good review."

Lmfao no it's not. Why does dream pop have to be darker and harsher? The reviewer keep mentioning a lack of depth, well no shit. She completely misses the point of her music. The best part of this are the pop melodies and lightness. Nothing about this is forgettable when songs like Stay With Me, Without a Blush, and Obsessed get stuck in your head.

"Sugary but hollow, Keepsake melts like cotton candy, dissolving on impact."

OOOOOO SO CLEVER, what a fantastic review.

dunno, after near enough a decade of wilderness years between my taste and pitchfork - living through the praise of 'big n' bland' production job indie (Tame Impala, M83) and then the 'reappraise everything in relation to trap/post-2015 hip hop' phase I just seem to agree with a lot of their scores this year if nothing else.

they're saying this is shallow, surface-level-appeal only, unmemorable and same-y with mostly third tier melodies...I agree on this one

I listen to this and I don't hear a transcendent light and airy vibe either, like I said it fails the Cocteau Twins test too. It never gets that ethereal, other worldly vibe going - just feels like a bedsit bore in terms of atmosphere, bit of a trudge, I imagine Hatchie staring up at a poster of Robert Smith in a dingy room singing to a load of stick on glow in the dark stars. She feels all too rooted to the earth, really workaday stuff :/

But glad folk are enjoying, I leave thread now

Score on the p4k review is much too high but otherwise completely agree with it.
Think the crux here is that there's very little to dislike here outside of its lack of substantial qualities, so if you dig it, you dig it - but as I said in the review, it does not spark joy to set the bar this low

I have a theory that since they copped all the flack for really low ratings (they used to give out 0/100 scores back in the day) they bump negative reviews by 10-20%.

Ok - now I really am leaving the thread :D

Nothing is original not even pitchfork opinion. There’s no such thing as a breath of fresh air now. Hackneyed to death. I like this though.

Dammit zak, this was your big chance to prove your music-as-product stance and you blew it :[

pitchfork develop weird vendettas against artists that don't show them enough respect (see: kishi bashi, the avalanches). i bet she turned down a slot at their festival so they're retaliating by pretending that her album is bad. praising the ep and heralding her as the "dream pop idol of tomorrow" only to flip and bash her album suggests some behind-the-scenes drama.

that 6.5 is so fucking passive-aggressive

Their reviews get on my nerves so bad, positive or negative.

Like, the Revlon commercial line is not funny and is just passive aggressive.

some writers on pitchfork are pretty great but it seems like they're always repping the most homogeneous shit, a lot of really sterile r&b and boring rap. they're a collective though, so it feels wrong to say they definitively suck. also "Sugary but hollow, Keepsake melts like cotton candy, dissolving on impact." this is a great analogy.

I'm in love with this album, maybe it's cuz I'm a sucker for what this album is derived from but it's a great blend of influences imo

I love the textures and overall sounds of a lot of classic shoegaze but honestly sometimes it's either too droning or abstract for me to want to listen to all of the time. Hatchie cuts that edge with a heavy pop element that makes this infinitely more listenable (to me, anyway). Call me a pleb, I have no shame.

I like both the general kind of shoegaze and Hatchie's poppier version. It's just a great album.

dis heckin ruelz0rz. I get a definite kind of Taylor Swift vibe from her vocals occasionally which is odd but satisfying given how much better-organized this is.

I don't get much TSwift, but a few times I thought she sounded like the lead singer of Eisley.
