It's tough liking some of these songs sometimes, I feel you.

This was such a huge drop off from This Old Dog (his best album, fite me)

I just don't understand what the big deal is about this is.
Seems like another obvious step into the mellow.
Is it the opener?

This album hurts. I love preoccupied and All of our yesterdays but even those feel like inferior tracks in Mac's catalog. I've tried to like this since it came out, but I never found it good. I'm just gonna put on my newly purchased 2 vinyl... I guess on the plus side it just makes his other albums feel way better?

This old dog is in fact his best Boney! Hard choice for second though.

"I guess on the plus side it just makes his other albums feel way better?"
or it could just help you realise he just was one of the most overhyped songwriters of the last decade after all

2 and Salad Days have a genuine charm to them imo but everything since has been irredeemably bland and derivative.

they do!! nothing less nothing more, yet he's heralded by many as some sort of saviour of indie rock
and I actually agree with Boney that Old Dog is his best, dude was on to something, shame this happened

it’s the opener.
2 is best.

He is overhyped for sure, but I don't think he ever wanted to be put on this pedestal. I honestly don't know how he rose to that "Indie rock savior" status or why he's even in that conversation. I just think the guy makes really solid and chill stuff for the most part.

That’s definitely true. He sold out a little, but always seemed uncomfy in the spotlight.
|

Imagine if this was secretly a companion piece to Here Comes The Indian by Animal Collective. That would have been wild
|
| |
There’s no doubt his intention for the first music video on this album was to make people say “what the fuck is this shit”

And he most certainly succeeded. That's not really a good thing though. There's a fine line between "cool weird" and "WEIRD weird."

I still don't get the hate.

Well let me say that this is by no means a "terrible album." It just feels undercooked, and could have been pushed so much further. The singles were tight though. Easily the most complete sounding tracks.

Just doesn't seem like a "2.5 average" letdown kind of album to me. Especially if there are people who think this old dog is the best. This is just a continuation of that one, as far as I can tell.

no hate, just boring af
"He is overhyped for sure, but I don't think he ever wanted to be put on this pedestal."
this is true, far as I'm concerned he's one of the most down to earth musicians out there, he's really good at crafting tunes DIY style and kids ate that shit up while calling it groundbreaking, but yeah I don't think he ever played along
|

it’s TOO chill, nothing to hold onto.
