It’s not his voice, but I really recommend the Broadway Cast recording of Once as well. Some new songs, some added songs, updated orchestrations, it really is beautiful. There’s a song called “Gold” in there that’s absolutely phenomenal. It makes a brief appearance in the movie as the song sang by the Irish singer at dinner.

nice write up sowing. I think I'd like this a lot. I remember liking a lot of the first Swell Season album though its been a long time

Thanks. Not personally a fan of this review as I think I kind of just rushed out a glorified track-by-track. I was just excited to talk about the album and spread the word, but that's always hard when you have no context/frame of reference (this is the first I've heard of him).

I understand, but you admit it in there so its not like youre bs-ing. "Falling Slowly" from Swell Season used to play in a pizza restaurant I used to wait tables at for some secondary money a few years back. Guessing that one must have charted somewhere. Good song.

"Leave a Light" is one of the weaker ones on here for me because it doesn't stand much out against his discog but against the rest of this album its an amazing closer in context
1. Race to the Bottom
2. Fool's Game
3. I'll Be You, Be Me
4. The Closing Door
5. Good Life of Song

First impressions are this could be up there with last year’s Ben Howard
My least favourite so far is actually Fool’s Game but I might prefer that one listening to it removed from its placing in the tracklist

It does have the same kind of magic Howard managed to capture last year. The chorus on "Good Life of Song" has been the latest moment to nearly bring me to tears.

[2] with the ben howard comments even though its a very different beast thematically

‘Baby Now’ is the most simple song here but real pretty
‘Weight of the World’ is the closest to Justin Vernon territory and a stunner.
This is probably AOTY so far but I’ve only listened to it twice so far so can’t be 100% certain yet.

‘Fools game’ REALLY reminds me of something.
It’s a bit of an ‘alternative/modern hymn’ and ever so slightly cheesy - plus the ending is a bit OTT.
Don’t hate it...don’t love it.

‘Wow even Doof 4.5’d this’
Slightly bluesy old man folk? This might be more Doofcore than sowingcore
As close to Michael Chapman as Justin Vernon

Glad you're into this; this can be our Ben Howard of 2019 ;-)

You know it might just be :D
We both like the Weyes Blood too right?
Like the Howard I could see this claiming a 2nd place finish for me come December
Not sure it quite has the chops to grab a Doof AOTY but it’ll certainly be in the mix

Also last year only nine albums kept a 4+ score...seems like already a few more might manage it this year

Listening to the Swell Season debut and its well made/performed, but a bit over egged and ‘rom com closing credits’ for me - any of his other stuff closer in spirit to this one?
