Then again, I like plenty of singers people don't like (Spencer Sotelo, anyone?) and I struggle to sympathize with people calling them annoying lol

It's not uncommon for me to hold unpopular opinions, particularly when it comes to music (just look at my album rankings for Dream Theater, Swallow the Sun and Dark Tranquillity), so when I find myself in disagreement, I kind of shrug like Nic Cage in Face/Off.

yeah i mean you put Awake over Metropolis, I'm considering revisiting Awake to see if I was being too harsh with my 3.5 for that album.

Awake is an album that's solid on first listen, but the more you listen and consider the formula at play, the more it simply works.

Awake is Labrie's best vocal performance for sure. The dude was a beast before the food poisoning.

@kal i actually way prefer petrucci's pre-awake guitar tone over the chugga 7 string guitar deal so that also gives more points to 93 acos

Kinda sad how the food poisoning permanently damaged his vocals.
Those highs he reaches on songs like Lie off of Awake ughhhh, but a mere memory now.

I think it's the fact that he went out on tour without letting it properly heal, ngl.

yeah man. admirable but hell dude a voice is a voice

As much as I like Oli Sykes' signature tone, the dude needs to stop fucking up his voice, and if it means teaching him a technique that makes him sound like a hollow ass robot live, unable to emote like usual, so be it.

A lot of singers do it, but that's due to them using the wrong techniques which could be easily fixed by hiring a vocal coach.
LaBrie's was different as he knew how to sing but didn't let his voice heal, like you said.

Yeah, the only contention I've had is I worry that the technique the coach implements would fuck with their emotional potential.

It's either that or screw up your voice and potentially be unable to do your job and earn a living.

Oh definitely. But I'm a selfish bastard that wants the maximum of what I see as emotionally engaging, or in the words of some, "whiny", vocal performances by any means necessary, so there's that part of me that doesn't give a shit how long they last as long as they deliver what I want.
