At this point I think Muse could come out with a masterpiece and it would get buried, given the hate for this band around this site. That said, I think it's the band having a bit of fun after the uber-seriousness of Drones and it doesn't feel to me that they give a damn about critical opinion anymore. I would never argue that this is their best, and it's not going to be on my main rotation, but I've heard bands phone it in a lot worse than this.

One day Matt Bellamy will stop making music and the world will be a better place for it

@CriticalMyth I would agree with you if they didn't keep writing songs about war crimes and the dangers of capitalism. If you want to be bombastic then be bombastic but you can't have such a juxtaposition between music and theme. I mean this album is about being caught up in a simulation without realising it but who the hell would realise that by just listening to the album?

For all their flaws, at least The Resistance and 2nd Law had a consistent theme about them. This and Drones are just absolute messes

@YadMot Fair enough in terms of wanting a consistent theme.

OTOH would it be Bellamy/Muse if even their "having a laugh" songs weren't somehow about war crimes and the dangers of capitalism? ;)

@Flugmorph Some bands are just a not-so-guilty pleasure, ya know?

I think the band were better when they werent writing songs about stuff like that. I like 'political' bands (I was an Enter Shikari superfan for the longest time, though I'm embarrassed to admit it) but Muse were just better when they wrote songs about themselves and their relationships imo.

You don't need to be embarrassed to admit having been a fan of Enter Shikari. Band rules

@YadMot My favorite era is Origin of Symmetry through The Resistance, so that might color my perspective.

I feel sorry for my metal friend who discovered this band recently through Origin of Symmetry. Poor fucker still doesn't know what horrors await him.
