they couldn't have picked a better first teaser track than "colossus". it's probably my favorite song by the band to date and that last minute and a half gets me hyped up every time

Danny Nedelko is another great track. Love their little Pavement nod around 1:20.

"I often dream of having a naive npr host yell at me over garden variety punk music.. "
considering I don't really like most punk music this must not be that garden variety or I wouldn't like it

never listened to much post punk but this feels like a hard grower
vocals aren't what i'm used, that's what i'll need time to get jiggy with

Real talk tho I don't listen to this for their politics. I try not to focus too much on the lyrics. Like, 'Samaritan's lyrics are so meh. "Toxic masculinity" is fucking stupid and doesn't exist.

If you don't wanna get political I won't but... toxic masculinity is a real concept, and it's not saying all masculinity it toxic it's just saying that aspects of masculinity can inhibit men from expressing how they feel and that's a pretty bad thing. The stereotypically masculine idea that all men should be dominant and aggressive is obviously something that is going to inhibit them from basic experiences in life.

na dude suicide being the biggest killer of men under fifty is just a random occurrence

Spot on mate. If you just bottle everything up it fucks you up from the inside, I've seen it happen and it isn't pretty.

Counter argument: those guys are dumb for not being themselves and suppressing this shit. It's like obese people eating themselves to death... Are we supposed to feel bad? Toxic masculinity is just another radical leftist ideal propagated by neo-feminists to further vilify males. I'm sorry, but your argument can't be "stereotypically masculine ideals" because we're not in high school any more. Pretty sure most people don't let stereotypes dictate their lives, and if they do, they're impressionable idiots

sorry gyro but that's the least coherent para i've ever read

There's literally nothing radical about getting men to open up, it's what the Samaritans charity have been doing for 60+ years now, saving god knows how many lives in the process. Bottling up your emotions is a traditionally masculine thing to do, however you want to spin it. People don't let stereotypes dictate their lives, but social pressure sure as hell does. And the best way to eliminate that is by talking about it and getting people, especially men, to open up.
|
| |
Wtf does that even mean? What are we supposed to do? Get together and cry and talk about our feelings? Bottling up emotions is bad, idk how this isn't a thing that people inherently know, especially these days

Let's not be silly now, it's just about telling someone if you feel shit, or you're considering hurting yourself. Believe me, a lot of people still don't like to do it because they're worried they'll be seen as lesser men for it. It happens.
|
| |
It almost certainly isn't a thing that men are taught is "bad"... societal messaging is powerful. just because you can see through it doesn't mean there aren't leagues of men who are trapped in these toxic notions of masculinity

I'd wager most men have been told to "man up" or "grow a pair" at some point. I heard it as a child and probably (definitely) internalised it.

also group therapy can be super beneficial to people. referring to it as "get together and cry and talk about our feelings" is ironically an example of toxic masculinity. men hearing shit like that is what dissuades them from getting help

Talking with your friends and having a cry if necessary can make you feel 1000000x better
