"As a teenager in the 90's,"
Are you STILL a teenager in the '90s? Where does one even get Members Only jackets these days?!

I like Jerry's vocals, have no real issue with the harmonies etc.
Everyone talking up Red Giant has built unwarranted anticipation for me. I liked it, but after the hype i was disappointed. I mean its good no doubt, its not super special to me. But one of the better tunes on the album.
I cant give this anymore than 3.3 myself. I really was hoping i could.
Never Fade, Rainier Fog my standouts, Red Giant, So Far Under my next faves.

'You tolerate the Jerry verses because you know the Layne payoff at the end is so worth the struggle.'
speak for yourself bud.....jerry's verses are great......and the jerry/layne harmonies were always my favorite characteristic of AIC and because of it, the new music with Duval translates very well and seamless

that finger picking acoustic middle section was played by Chris Degarmo from Queensryche in case any of you didn't know.
But yeah, Drone is the shit.

yep, the over-use of layered vocals on both verses and choruses just make most of these songs just so... samey. there's no dynamic within any of the songs.
it's like they know that's the AiC 'sound' but aren't confident enough (even 3 albums in) in either dude's voice to just carry a few lines on their own.
album is their most consistent post-Layne, but also the most safe and ultimately forgettable album they've made.

Jerry should sing by himself more

I dont think its through any lack of confidence at all, its just the way they decided to go.
I dont think its only the vocals making it sound samey.
Guitar tones, just song styles in general.
I don't think its any more consistent than BGWTB
I suppose the highs on that album were higher, but the average songs on that are no less average as the ones on here.
If its more consistent its out of fluke that they couldn't write another Private Hell, or Last of My Kind or your decision etc.
Consistency is usually stated as a positive thing, but if consistent mediocre, an album that is less consistent but with better highs in my opinion is the album deserving more credit.

This certainly deserves a higher average than Devil Put Dinosaurs Here. There's a few outstanding moments on that one, but overall it's an overlong slog.

Disagree. This isn’t even as high as TDPDH.
|

TDPDH had some good songs but was boring overall imo. Same with Black Gives Way to Blue. Still need to check this
