Yeah Protomartyr's alright but this is next level shit- makes them sound like Sesame Street (or the fucking National). Have you heard The Drones last few albums?

This is my AOTY so far, this album is my drug. Shellfish toxin is the only thing holding it back from a 5 in my opinion, it's obviously filler and I don't mind it as background music, but it's a guaranteed skip on a dedicated listen. The rest is absolute gold though and i've lost a little faith in humanity seeing how many dislikes they've got on youtube.

Shellfish Toxin is great, what's so bad about it?

It's a great song, easily on par with all the rest

"Have you heard The Drones last few albums?" no...I guess I should(!?)
"Yeah Protomartyr's alright" Protomartyr is one thing Protomartyr's Relatives in Descent its a "grab my balls" kind of shit, it really hits me.

I didn't know who Protomartyr were so I checked them out and they legitimately do sound like The National

"sound like The National"
I agree with the observation but Relatives in Descent doesn't and it got more that Cave's vocal approach (in terms of delivery and interpretation). Its dark raw stuff imo.

Relatives In Descent is the one I listened to.
I guess I can hear a little Cave in the voice, but it mostly sounded like The National.
"its dark raw stuff"
Idk I was actually enjoying it, but it sounded like really poppy shit

I’ve only heard the newest Protomartyr and it’s just ok imo. I don’t hear The National in it at all though, if it did sound like them it’d probably be a lot better ;-P

curious, for me is a pretty intimate listen, with the same instruments across all tracks (awesome drumming), no "stadium effects", but I gotta be honest, way less immediate than this one. Some tracks (if not every) have even a structure where starts sounding weird, and as the song progresses start to make sense and fitting and beautiful at the same time.
Also I guess their image is so "The National" and that doesn't bring anything good to it.

@theBoneyKing
another curious thing, I followed that album here since its release, and actually started with a 3,5/3,6 AVG if I'm not mistaken. Now I'm happy to see it at 3,9. It was a slow burner for me but also to this site X) its a bit depressing album/ make you cry album if you really get into it. you guys should try it again some day (:...or not if you don't want to get depressed lololol

I feel Shellfish Toxin is filler mainly cos of how it meanders and lacks any sense of drive...if the instrumentals were more structured and varied it could have been a great track, I agree it's the one part of the album holding it back from it being a 5...at least in my eyes
I keep hearing people recommend Protomartyr, anyone recommend an album to start on with them?

Relatives in Descent is the best one, but its a more intimate and hard one. The previous two I listened to have more of a punk rock approach imo.

Thanks, I'll give it a go!
And yeah in response to TFS' youtube dislikes I think it's related to how anti-conservative Liddiard is...a lot of people are far too fragile
