"dutifully following qotsa's suit in absolutely wasting a killer drummer too.."

I was thinking the same thing. Sonically, it sounds like Homme did some work on this, especially since that nigga is also seemingly into swing and piano music as of late.

And yeah their drummer is gonna be bored out of his mind when they play these songs live.

Queens always have had polka and swing influences. Listen to "No One Knows" and tell me that doesn't sound like rock polka in the verses.

I love Villains and always will. It's a fun listen, unlike this.

Edit: I have to give props to AM. After releasing their most accessible and most popular album, the release an album that it could be played in the background of any retiree cruise casino.

'This is the sound of a band growing up and going in the right direction while still retaining the cheek and vigour.'

Zak, I got absolutely zero cheek or vigour from this. Early albums and cheek and vigour? Sure. Not this.

Also, you can forgive Turner's Bowie vocals in the middle of the album? Couldn't keep a straight face with them.

I'm not sure what would be a good direction for this band now...sad truth is not all bands age well. Simple fact, this was a band who made their name with a video showing their drummer giving it some.

The band themselves sound like they've had their wings clipped, this might as well be Turner solo.

Bad album any which way I look at it. Just listen to the Aidan Moffat today, bin this, it's a waste of everyone's chuff.

"Yeah QotSA rules now and forever"

that's what religious zealots say about Jaaaaysus..

Homme helped this band break new ground back when he still had cojones.. now both bands are washed up.. maturity does not have to equal total boredom..

I'm digging the new Mark Kozelek too, some great albums today.

Marky Mark Koz knows how to age like a proper boring old fossilised cvnt.

Prob AOTY in waiting, best since 'Benji' ;D

Hilarious hearing about him worrying about Ariel Pink's career and being fascinated in which songs in an artist's catalogue end up their 'most played' on Spotify (he mentions Spotify at least once every 3 minutes of tape on the album)

He's just...rattling it all out lol

I was thinking about Villains when listening to this for some reason. Both albums are around the same level of quality, obviously different sounding but yea. Arctic Monkeys and QotSA made most of their best material in the early/mid 2000s, but they're still releasing worthwhile music and changing up their sound to avoid being stale which I appreciate.

'There’s some career bests on here'

There is nothing on here that is career best, and easily the worse thing they've ever done. Aparently Jamie even said to Alex that it should be a solo album but Alex insisted apparently, I've gotta agree with Jamie.

The bands career bests came in the first 3 albums, and they're now on 3 dissapointing albums in a row. This band is finished.

Liked that Kozelek way more than expected. Agree that it's the best since Benji

I can see that. Granted I think AM have been on more of a downtrend and Queen's record before Villains is arguably their best one.

I mean, the one thing I respect here is this album sounds nothing like any other Arctic Monkeys album. I've never listened to much 'Last Shadow Puppets' - something had me thinking this is more the sort of style you'd have expected from that project? I dunno, I guess I just really don't warm to Alex Turner's vocals enough to want to listen to material that is effectively built to serve his lyrics/vocals above everything else.

Lucid - Kozelek just sounds so liberated, to a degree you rarely hear with any artist, let alone a mainstream one.

He's relaxing into this 'latter career stage' so well now, like he can just stretch out and have fun with it - he actually sounds like he's making music as a pure release and that's refreshing.

This album (eek) sounds like the opposite sort of deal, this sounds self conscious and all a bit tortured getting it out here. Basically, a painful birth.

Yea Like Clockwork is one of my favorite modern rock albums and probably my second favorite QotSA after SftD.

Did the band really consider this more of an Alex Turner solo album? That's interesting. According to Wikipedia, Turner wrote the whole thing himself so I guess it basically is.
