"The riffs under the chorus of Never Again could be my biggest earworm of the discography."

^^This. Or at least it's in the damn running.

I understand the complaint that you can't hear the 3 guitars in this and it feels flat, e.g. "Feed the Wolf" and "Down," but I'm under the impression that BB's had pretty good song construction in regard to how their riffs fit together within tracks. I've always found them pretty interesting and better than the butt rock average, like on the chorus of "Never Again."

Are you guys who are critics of BB's riffs, dubbing them boring, guitar players by chance? I'm just wondering if this complaints stems from some insight into playing guitar that I don't have as someone who's never picked up the instrument.

I personally think people are being overly critical of the album just because it's their sixth album. Breaking Benjamin have stuck to a formula since their first album more or less, and at least this album is providing a lot more heaviness both in the riffing and vocally. Also this is the first album that they've ever used a 7-string on so that's pretty cool. But lyrically Breaking Benjamin has literally been the same since album 1

^ That's pretty much the reason why people are being critical of this tbh. Even I admit that this doesn't break away from their comfort zone and I'm hoping to see if they can.

Just because you don't play an instrument doesn't mean you can't appreciate/criticize music.

Of course that's true. What I mean, though, is that I don't find BB's guitar work boring--redundant on occasion, but never boring. Some people do, however, and I'm wondering if this has anything to do with these people being guitar players, which makes them privy to something in BB's music that I don't pick up on, as I'm no guitarist.

Gordo,

I didn't realize they used a 7-string on this. That's pretty cool though.

See, I disagree with the claim that lyrically BB's unchanged. There's def a difference between sober and non-sober Ben's lyrics.

At this point, if someone wants to start listening to this band, I would recommend just picking which album cover you like the most and that be the only album you listen to/buy because their repetition is just too much.

Toon,

There's more it than that. Though far from lucid, he's more coherent. As unbelievable as this sounds, he's matured, philosophically speaking. The further you go in their discography, certain reoccurring themes have now coalesced, more or less, into what I'd go as so far as to call an existential philosophy that I happen to find compelling.

Can't speak for anyone else but I indeed do play guitar, and while I can't say for sure how technical the newer riffs are since I haven't played them myself, they certainly don't sound that intimidating. Not that most BB riffs do - they've never been shredders, that hasn't changed - but at the very least, the riffs of the first 3 releases in particular really perk my ear up and make me go "oh shit, that'd be fun to play." A highly subjective call, but that's where I stand on it

I don't listen to this band for the complexity of their guitar riffs. I listen to this band for Burnley's once in a generation voice and anyone listening for anything different is doing it wrong.

"The guitar feels flat and has no impact" - that's because they know their strengths and stick to it. The last thing I'd want is to have his voice covered in some progressive lo-fi layering that can really showcase big riffs or some crap. There's a million other bands for that.

It's called the existential ramblings of an edgy 15 year old.

Not a bad review. If someone loves past albums by these guys, they're almost certain to love this one. I'm happy with the album, and was a but worried it would be worse, so I'd call it a win, lol

Haha, maybe. I can't blame you guys for your judgments, but I've done a lot of thinking and listening to most of BB's discography recently on long car trips, and I'm pretty convinced there is more going on than you guys think.

give the fella's other ratings a look, it's not like he's heard much poetic genius elsewhere lol

but yeah, nah, Ben's been on lyrical autopilot for years and I see nothing deep going on his stuff at all. If you think you've got insight though, lay it on us

these lyrics are extremely simple and you can sing the songs after one listen because you already know what he's going to say...
