critiques abt atmosphere over songwriting are bullshit as this release focuses far more on melody and catchy refrains/song structures rather than the dissonant soundscapes on their first release

It’s not a great name, imo. But idc. I listen to bands with way shittier names. Meme-tier shitty names, honestly.

Jamming old material (huehuehuehue) by these guys today I have found that what I miss most from their old sound is the sense of desperate urgency that shaped a lot of Women-Viet Cong. There were splashes of that on the (new) S/T but after hearing this, I feel that may have been forced a bit at the time. This feels natural. It feels good- or, at least, as good as it can. It’s dark in a different way. It plays at different feelings of general discomfort than they had before. It’s a welcome thing for me at this point.

I like this, but it feels a bit too surface level; it doesn’t really convince me of its darkness, and the cheesiness of the lyrics and the use of repetition doesn’t help. At this point I think the singer is the band’s weakest link, as evidenced by the closer which is definitely the most convincing piece here.

Without a doubt, which is weird because I didn't have any problems with him on Viet Cong. He's mixed way too high on this one for sure.

Saw them tour in support of the Viet Cong LP. They played the whole album. It was one of the better sets I’ve seen to date. Drummer had a broken arm and went full Rick Allen on his set.

iirc they had Thor Harris on some dates when Mike Wallace broke his arm (and Wallace still played, so there were two drummers)

'iirc they had Thor Harris on some dates when Mike Wallace broke his arm (and Wallace still played, so there were two drummers)'

Yep, he was there. Wallace was able to play a lot of it on his own. The extra percussion on-hand was nice though.
