@Spirit - I mean I get what you're trying to say but I can't think of another drummer from the thrash scene that ever bored/bothered me as much as Lars so I don't really buy that as a good reason tbh
But I'm glad some people dig him. I'm jealous.

@Lucca haha well yea, I can't say I enjoy his drumming on its own that much either, it's more of a respect thing I guess

"How so?"
the quote is referring to song structure and composition, not intricacy and technicality. while a band like megadeth, for example, were vastly more proficient with their instruments and therefore could make more intricate, dazzlingly technical songs, this album went beyond thrash and was made in a much more epic grandiose fashion. to say any other thrash band at the time were doing things like the title track or orion is laughable.

"Casavir, dude, you're acting like your average wannabe-trve-metal-kid-next-door who just a year ago began to expand his tastes beyond the entry level borders and now feels the obsessive-compulsive need to wage an unholy crusade against everything even remotely considered "entry level" by ramming "but...but...that lesser known album is way more artistically and culturally refined and this well known album lowered the bar" rhetoric down everyone's throat."
It's entirely OK to get into metal with this album. Proceeding to make the ridiculous claim that it is somehow the most revolutionary or forward-thinking album in its genre is not.

@Spirit - Yeah, I dunno about his drumming but I was only half joking when I said I respect that he turned Metallica into a business. The man was successful as fuck at helping that process along, despite his public douchery.

@Casavir - Tool is the most forward thinking 80s thrash metal band

Honestly, much of Burton's effectiveness is diminished by the production and even the title track drags a bunch. Compare this to the likes of Doug Keyser on any of Watchtower's albums, who is entirely forward in the mix. Then you have the problem of everyone but Cliff writing outside of their station which is made entirely evident by tracks like The Thing That Should Not Be, Leper Messiah, Welcome Home and even Disposable Heroes being some of the most boring and/or shitty portions of the entire album.

it's a watershed record in the genre though; it took thrash from the dingy clubs to sold out arenas and made it accessible.

For the big four, maybe. For any other band worth a damn post-'86, not really.

you may think it drags, but my point still stands.
and i'm not sure what you mean by his effectiveness but his fingerprints are over this, from the intro to battery to the bridge in the title track to the entirety of orion.

"and i'm not sure what you mean by his effectiveness but his fingerprints are over this, from the intro to battery to the bridge in the title track to the entirety of orion."
What I mean is that his performance and contributions could be far more appreciated if the production wasn't total ass when it came to its rhythm section.

Master definitely doesn’t drag - the riffs rule, solos rule, and it changes so many times - I dunno, I think it’s epic

If the album was more like the title track or at least had a substantial amount of editing on the other tracks, then my score would have been much higher. As it stands, pretty overrated.

let's be honest most thrash isn't very accessible. if those bands had been able to create more accessible music without losing any power or intensity maybe they would've fared better. that's what separates a few from the many and that's why this album is so highly regarded by so many.

Except they lost virtually all sense of power and intensity for most of the album and on top of all of that, made an album that was nowhere musically varied or interesting enough to justify its length.

that's where you and i will have to disagree, which is fine. you may not like the composition, structure, or execution, but it's mark on not just thrash but heavy music in general can't be dismissed.
