i once put this band on around some mates (having never heard them before, myself included) and was immediately rewarded with a slap on the head and a cry of "wot the fuark is this shit?!"
i had no explanation

Man, that first song is just indescribable. It's super strange sounding.
|
| |
It's neat, but there's not much here that keeps me wanting to come back to it. As always, I find this one to be little more than a curious novelty.

Oh fuck Evok, and I was going to check this...
|

I'm sure you'd dig it bro, it's just not my jam personally.

Could use this description for the whole album imo. This isn't for me

Unfortunately Portal is a band that, in my opinion, require the artwork that comes with the record and visuals in their live show. It really adds a lot of mystique to their sound. And since they're so conceptual and all, it really does lack without it. I suppose you could enjoy it without all that context but it's a bit like watching a movie with the screen covered and only hearing it.

I can't see myself liking it anymore with that context said, though i guess it makes their sound a bit more understandable.
Digressing completely, you're last sentence kind of summarizes my overall gripe with all the "post" genres out there: it doesn't feel like music so much as movie soundtracks without any visuals

I think these guys might up their live game even more with silent film imagery live from a projector.
