This feels like the right way to go after Like Clockwork instead of just trying to do the dark, moodier sound again.

Each to their own I guess, Rated R didn't do anything for you?

Clockwork is a great album. That being said it's far from my favorite qotsa record. I love dark and brooding but i dont listen to qotsa for that. I know homme was in a dark place . That doesn't make me like it any more. I come to qotsa for energetic zaniness and mechanical sounding hard rock. Clockwork was too organic and honestly when it was released it did not satisfy my qotsa fix in the slightest. Villains however is doing the trick.

I'm getting used to the style and sound of this record, and listening in the highest quality possible atm, seeing if it'll grow at all. I wish the production was better.

The guitars and drums just sound thin and kind of flat at times

It's like EV production with more emphasis on the bass rhythms, which rule hard btw.

I didn't really love how EV sounded either.

Agreed that the bass rules on this.

The bass sounds amazing, I get EV vibes from this but it really is its own entity in the QOTSA canon.

He's married to Brody Dalle, so technically Josh is still a step above us.
