I would like to buy this drummer a beer...this works so much better for me with a few extra BPMs and a little edge compared to all the other "meandering bs" I would compare it to such as War On Drugs, Grizzy Bear, current National etc.

Yeah the drumming really adds a lot of driving energy on some tracks, really integral imo

First 7 tracks were perfect but it's slowed down a little much for my liking by track 10 -- strings are all gorgeous, though. Right now this is at least a 4 on first listen, will likely go higher and if it picks the pace back up could top a 4.5 by a few decimal points. This has that classic factor, could be my 4th or 5th 5 of the year if I develop any sort of emotional attachment.
Or it could just be first listen hype. Who knows.

holy hell the closer is a SOTY candidate
confident this is a 4.3+, repeated listens will determine if it's a 4.3, 4.5, 4.7, or 5.

it is 100% as good as everyone says it is. unless they're saying it's bad, then it is definitely not as good as everyone says it is.

there might be some pacing issues but it's all just so genuine and heartfelt that I can't fault it.

Yeah this is probably the only release this year that has a legitimate chance to unseat Brand New for my personal AOTY. It isn't likely to happen because I'm such a huge fanboy, but this is too good to rule out. It is by no means perfect; the vocals aren't the most original, sounding like a blend of Matt Berninger and Jack Antenoff vying to be Springsteen, and the pacing could be more well-balanced...those are my only complaints however, and the raw emotion present during every second of this mask any flaws to begin with. This just has that "it" factor, I can already tell this is one of my new favorite bands.

Yeah, I'm with Sowing. I've only listened to it a couple of times, but it has that "feeling" that an AOTY would have in my books. To me the singer and even the band sounds like a blend of The National and Gaslight Anthem, which is good for me.

There is nothing new under the sun folks. All the comparisons that have been spouted are pretty right on, but what is originality if not a blending of the familiar through a unique filter? At least for me, this record feels fundamentally different than everything it has been compared to. If I had to label it, I would say this has a spirit of rock and roll that comes through more clearly than some of their contemporaries.

I don't think too many people here disagree given all the 4.5s and 5.0s.
Hey Sow, I am guessing the album is as good as people hyped it up to be huh? A 5 in two days. Damn.
