This is such a massive disappointment I hope it grows, but I doubt it.

There's not a single track in here (Maybe Andromeda but that's it) that could possibly stand with Gorillaz' classic songs from other records. Other than that, there's several OK tracks, but no great tracks whatsoever.

Yup, it's ratings time...

1. Intro [n/a]

2. Ascension [4/5] probably one of best here, on my first listen I was thinking this boded well and this album might trump 'Plastic Beach'...how long would it last?

3. Strobelite [1.5/5] ...not long. 'Lite' is the word, this is lame gospel 90s style fodder that I thought had gone out with the Triassic period.

4. Saturnz Barz [3.5/5] not bad, this still feels like Gorillaz, it stands out for being different from its neighbours more than being amazing but fine.

5. Momentz [2.5/5] first 30 seconds you're thinking this is pretty tight but then...it reveals that it's got nowhere to develop. The female vocals when they come in are a war crime and finally stiff the track.

6. Interlude [n/a]

7. Submission [3/5] this is an ok song but this is when I get nothing 'Gorillaz' about the song at all. Guest overload claims its first victim. You need something to pep the second half but not sure that thing is Danny Brown :/

8. Charger [2/5] if Tricky picked this out between the corn in his crap everyone would say this is awful, but as Gorillaz everyone is more forgiving.

9. Interlude [n/a] too many interludes now

10. Andromeda [4/5] it's nice isn't it, not revolutionary, sorta disco-y and yet not awful. If this was the worst song on the album then we'd be talking, it certainly shouldn't be one of the highlights.

11. Busted and Blue [4.5/5] ok, and this one is the highlight. Less is muuuuur or something. Is the song title a boy band joke?

12. Interlude [n/a]

13. Carnival [1/5] more gospel detritus shite.

14. Let Me Out [2/5] and more, bit of a mess all told but at least some more interesting elements than the previous track.

15. Interlude [n/a]

16. Sex Murder Part [3/5] want to like this more, it's unfortunately a big nothing dressed up pretty, a lot of lipstick on this pig and they kinda get a pass.

17. She's My Collar [3.5/5] this is a decent tune, sounds a bit like a zillion other tunes but hey, it's serviceable. Not sure Albarn can effectively do sexy but things don't get embarrassing at least.

18. Piss break [n/a]

More to follow...

19. Hallelujah Money [2/5] oh my darling Clementine. You know what goes well with a rich clementine sauce? A big old ham. Stop hamming Clementine, it's undignified. Overall boring AND annoying.

20. We Got the Power [1.5/5] I'm not sure Albarn should be singing about being a great big bell in this tune as I'm inclined to agree. Short and a toxic dose of sweetness.

21. Interlude [n/a]

22. The Apprentice [3/5] I kinda like half the things going on here and hate the other half...a microcosm of the album as a whole? Maybe.

23. Halfway to the Halfway House [2.5/5] more average-y gospel vox non descript blancmange bullshit. Something about a 'cherryade fountain'.

25. Out of Body [4/5] like this, guest features are good. Does it sound like Gorillaz in any way? Does it fuck, could be anyone, and yes it would fit way better on another album.

26. Ticker Tape [2/5] snoozy Albarn crooner number, practically begging to be skipped.

27. Circle of Friendz [1/5] fittingly finishes on a shit gospel number.

We Got the Power is such unbearable trash. I have no clue as to how or why Albarn thought that not only was it an acceptable track, but that it was a *fitting closer to the first Gorillaz album in seven years*.

I don't mind We Got The Power but its weird not to think that the lyrics are sarcastic given Albarn's past music.

I can agree this isn't a mind blowing album and Gorillaz have done better but I can't get over the fun and energetic aspect of it. It's more like a playlist than an album and if you approach it like that it does its job fairly well.

I mean this is obviously no Plastic Beach but it's entertaining if nothing else. I don't think of this as *good* so much as I do fun. Pitchfork was actually pretty on point when they described it as a party album for the end of the world.

Plastic Beach was a slight disappointment already. This takes the D.

Yeah I liked how Pitchfork equated it to walking through a massive house with different parties going on and some stars are at the "right" party and some are in the "wrong" party. That's 100% what it feels like

Pretty much. The album's a mess, but a pretty enjoyable mess.

I don't see how this is a more of a conceptual 'mess' than Plastic Beach, tbh. Both work with a very basic frame-work and some key-words, but most if not all the time every song works on itself. I dunno, I don't see it as a valid point to criticize.

If you don't like the songs for what they are, fine, but it is not supposed to work with a 'narrative' or any of that crap, it's just a bunch of songs with kinda similar theme to them, thas all.

Unless you've been spinning it nonstop since the 28th (and even then), I don't think you can write this album off yet. It's just so damn dense, I'd be surprised if there weren't at least some parts that were previously hidden to the ears that bubble up and click.

Also Pitchfork can sod the hell off for giving this the same rating at Demon Days.

It's no 'Plastic Beach' but we must also remember 'Plastic Beach' is a 3-3.5 album, hardly a 4.5-5

I hated Plastic Beach when it came out. "Where's Danger Mouse?" I said to myself.

What a spoiled brat.
