lol I think you make a good case, I'm just not quite vibing with this album yet. Every time I start a listening sesh Ascension sorta puts me off, and from there I find myself skimming the tracklist instead

it's very similar to plastic beach but trades groove for dynamic

I'm really curious about what people consider to be the definitive 'Gorillaz sound' and why this doesn't completely fill that quota. Beyond pure enjoyment, the criticism this gets the most is that 'it doesn't sound like Gorillaz'. News flash, y'all: Gorillaz hasn't sound like Gorillaz since 2001.

I've personally come to the conclusion there is not such a thing as the definitive Gorillaz sound, every album has a distinct flavor, sound, production tweaks and thematic arcs that makes them work as a semi-cohesive, stand-alone structure, and any attempts to unify them based on estrictly musical aspects is either forced af or inconsistent.

Gorillaz is whatever Albarn wants them to be. Just fucking deal with it and move on.

Ticker Tape is my second favorite.

Though I disagree that Busted and Blue was boring. Song gave me goosebumps, something about it is special, can't put my finger on what.

Yeah needs more Damon. Still a lot of good stuff on here, Danny Brown goes off in Submission.

The 'this doesn't sound like the band' argument is always dumb and pointless

I dunnonly, given my thoughts on the singles, which I stick to, I'm surprised how much I enjoyed this over all. I thought I was going to be super disappointed

I really don't think this will grow on me and general consensus is kinda lukewarm

this shit a slow-burner. I'm hopeful on a slight average increase...

many people who rated this 3, 3.5 revisiting to find more things to like about it.

I'd say caring about average rating isn't worthwhile?
