But I think the point Fripp was trying to make is that you could make music without necessary following the psychedelic influence and still make a great album.

idk I guess Moonchild is a bit psychedelic, but I hear a distinct "academic" approach to the improv. Probably why people hate it so much haha. "I Talk to the Wind" is a bit psychedelic too but more just the lyrics.

What would you consider the first "pure prog" album, Fripper?

Well it can't have psychedelic rock or blues. Idk it's not very clear cut haha

If not Court, there are a few from 1970 that would fit the bill.

Sandy Bull's Fantasias for Guitar & Banjo (1963) in terms of "progressive"

That's a good album, but it's also proto-psych and it does have some blues. It is "progressive" for sure.

I didn't read the review at all, but I'm expecting a constructive criticism to progressive rock bands from a contemporary point of view. Here are some points that makes a prog album "bad" from someone who listens average pop songs:

1) the songs are SOOOOOOOOO long and boring.

2) I got lost at the middle of the song

3) The lyrics are written by an Asimov wannabe writer.

4) The guitar technique doesn't make sense.

5) I'd rather prefer listening to Bach than a band trying to emulate him.

6) What's the point of making "movements" inside the songs.

7) Radios know that 10-minute songs are a waste of time.

8) Tales from topographic oceans is one of the worst things that happened in the 70's

I mean that Fripp created his own guitar tunning and he created the frippertonics, and that's something that an average listener would probably find weird.
