why does this sound like nickelback from time to time

prolly whatever limiter they used on Dustin's vocals, gives some major Nickleback vibes.

i dont know if i can trust any album tagged "political" that has a song titled "Wake Up"

It has occurred to me that the weak point of this album is definitely Teppei. Dustin's voice is better than ever, rhythm section is better than ever, Teppei's guitar tone is better than ever, but that's it. I heard zero creativity in the lead guitar lines he wrote for this, and any of the cool piano melodies or other unique touches he used to throw in are gone as well.
Interestingly, he even admitted as much. In an interview I watched on Youtube, he quite bluntly told the interviewer things like "I'm definitely a worse guitar player now", and talked about how he hadn't practiced or even so much as picked up the guitar at all during the hiatus "except to move it out of the way". I guess it shows.

Interview is here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u-1bO6MiZ_Y, the part I referred to starts at 12:30.
Seriously though, he's taken to ripping off himself. Listen to the lead guitar hook in Blood on the Sand and then go back and listen to the intro of Kill Me Quickly -- I'll be damned if they're not exactly the same thing. I almost wonder if it was intentional because it's such a blatant copy & paste.

I can usually assume that if half or less of the commenters claim to hate an album on this site, it's probably pretty good.

Hurricane is pretty sick

Drums sound really fake and overproduced though

I honestly thought the same thing, that Teppei's guitar leads arent as strong as usual. Became really apparent after listening to Beggars right after this album
|
| |
Yeah it's not a good thing when the first instinct as soon as the final song ends is hitting up a previous album instead of pressing repeat.

what's up with the digitalness of the acoustic right away in Hurricane
I sort of dig the underlying electronics of the song but really without the production on this album being so good I think I'd absolutely hate it

I've thought Teppei's stuff has been lacking ever since Beggars. He hasn't done anything comparable to his work on Vheissu or the Alchemy Index in quite some time.
That said, I can dig this album's more straight forward approach to guitar parts - they're definitely going more for of a wall of sound than lush arrangements.
|
| |
@kingjulian yeah true, they did achieve what they were going for. Thing is, they've even done the "wall of sound" thing better in the past -- 'Firebreather', 'Hold Fast Hope', 'Stare at the Sun', and several others are far superior to virtually anything on this album.

Idk I'd definitely put Hurricane up there with the likes of Stare at the Sun and such. It's probably in my top 10 Thrice songs right now.

To be everywhere is to be Thrice on Sputnik in 2016

I can see where you're coming from, but I disagree. He might not handily throw out badass leads like he used to, but he utilized more restraint and finesse on Beggars and M/M.

| |
@julian yeah Hurricane is tremendous. And I do feel like these songs will be really good live -- I'm seeing them on the 7th in Austin absolutely can't wait

Wake Up is astoundingly awful. How did they achieve that?

Yeah that's definitely my least favorite track on this
