My self-perception, by proclaiming this to be better than an album that has "Between the Bars," "Alameda," "Angeles," "No Name No. 5," and "Say Yes" on it ;]

Joking aside though, this and Either/Or could very well both be 5s and I might just be being a bit strict. I did let a bit loose a couple months ago when I 5'd Automatic for the People, Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space, and Tindersticks' debut in the space of a few days; maybe I'm just a bit hesitant to add yet more 5s onto the pile so relatively soon after such a blitz

As long as you still have significantly more 4.5's than 5's your ratings will still look pretty

5 them both ;D

Just remember that at the end of the day what you 5 is totally inconsequential.

That said, this is not a 5. ;-P

Boney you really still rate Arcade Fire 'Funeral' above this?

Yup. Strange comparison though... Funeral was one of the foundational albums on developing my music taste. Still a top 10 album most likely. This is top 50 maybe. Just doesn't quite have the impact on me to warrant a 5 and I still think D Scott Parseley and Flick hold it back ever so slightly.

Weakest songs don't really hold back a rating too much for me, the rating is generally based on positives rather than negatives. If an album has 9 five star songs and then a 1 star song it'd still get a five star ratings unless that song was particularly long or intrusive.

It wasn't really a direct comparison, more that this seems more your ballpark than 'Funeral, and something's always stopped be 5'ing 'Funeral' (painful as I don't have another 2004 5)

This is one of my most secure 5's now...but then I did have this on a 2.5 or a 3 before rediscovering it ;D

It's true this fits my current taste better than Funeral but as I said that one holds a special place. It's also a lot more emotionally potent than this for me.

Most of my 5s are a lot about consistency. There are very few songs I'd rate below a 4/5 individually among my 5s. This has two. I probably could still 5 this but again it doesn't quite have that feel of a 5.

Fair enough, 'Funeral' is great, I don't really love it when the female singer fronts a whole song with them though. She's excellent as part of the other songs, backing vocals or a verse or what have you, but I always found her own songs quite dull.

'My Blue Wave' hits me harder than anything on 'Funeral', that was never an emotional album for me, more about the energy they transmitted. They had that 'gang' thing that the great bands have, they lost that quality after that album though. 'The Suburbs' was a traditionally decent album so that impressed me, I thought they were all about that 'collective energy'.

This is just so unified and perfect to my ears, it might even be the most traditionally 'perfect' album I've ever heard. Not a duff note. It's between this and 'Kaputt' for having the most of that 'perfect' quality, I dunno. 'Everything in its right place' The Album.

My Blue Wave is a top 20 song for me.. that said, album would track higher for me if the songs were reined in length.. listening to it whole is somewhere between a heart-rending experience and an occasional slog

Don't you dare touch those song lengths Butcher, esp the opening three.

You could chop one of the weaker songs off this and no harm would be done, I can get behind that.

Earlier today, I went out for a joyride with my mother and grandma to celebrate my 21st birthday, and I threw this on as we approached a coastal stretch along the shoreline of Cape Ann. I could not have chosen a more ideal album for the scenery and weather; the route was winding with lovely trees all around, and you could feel the crisp seaside air waltzing in through the car windows. The weather was ideal - warm without being too hot, with the clouds only adding to the immense beauty of everything around me. The way this album melded into my surroundings was just perfect, and I got to share it all with two wonderful people. After today's events, and how this album will forever be tied to them, only one rating is appropriate.

I concede.

Good lad Dyl - I'm not sure the term 'joyride' means the same in the US as the UK ;D

Basically, did your mother break the door lock and then your grandma hotwire the car?

That nostalgic connection is often what tips an album from that 4.5 rating to a 5. What did your passengers make of the album?

Joyride is a crime of such romantic quality.. you're stealing a car for no other practical reason than to go for a nice, scenic drive.. sport of kings

Nice one Dylan, all I need is a similar experience and I'll probably be able to 5 this.

Yeah, apparently there are different meanings for that word on either side of the pond - the car was my own of 3 years, no theft or hotwiring involved :P

My mom loved the album, think my grandma did too but when I looked back to check on her during "The New Cobweb Summer" she'd already dozed off and AFAIK she didn't wake up until about midway through "Flick"

I thought so too initially, first spun it while out on a walk on a winter evening, fit the atmosphere really well. Then that seaside drive happened... then my dad, his girlfriend and I had this playing while we were out on their patio at sundown last night... so I guess this fits both winter and summer for me?
