This is a difficult, difficult album to quantify IMHO. There's a whole bunch of interesting sounds kicking around in the background, and some really cool ideas for songs which Coldplay have not even come CLOSE to trying before, but the execution can get so AAAARRRRGGGHHH at times

To me it's sort of the opposite; I feel like this is just really bad and the only excuse I can make for rating it higher than a 2 is that I'm a Coldplay junkie.
I'm curious about these new ideas you're hearing, though.

It's cool if you could spot new ideas, but tbh the only new idea I could detect was taking a few (very light) stabs at RnB, especially on "Hymn for the Weekend". Otherwise this sounded like a (even more) watered down version of "Mylo Xyloto".

Listening now, I sort of agree with Sowing that it's pretty bad but despite it it's hard for me to totally hate because Coldplay gives me so much nostalgia. It shouldn't affect my rating though. I'll just spin Viva La Vida later on and I'll remember that they can do much better.
