Devin did not produce the album. He only mixed it. Intronaut produced it and I forget the name of the guy that engineered it, but he's the one you want to look at for why it sounds so perfect. I'll look in the credits when I get home tonight. obviously this rules. hard.

can someone explain to me the differences between producing, engineering, and mixing?

this is super good. can't stop jamming it. the record has a remix of valley of smoke on the D side with some very cool etching of the birds from the album cover. really well done

"can someone explain to me the differences between producing, engineering, and mixing"
in a very basic nutshell. producer kinda dictates the recording session and get's levels right for the off the floor stuff, helps the band with songs and arrangements and whether a take was good or not
engineers I think work under the producers and help with the soundboard
mixing is done after the recordings are finished to basically bring all the levels out equally and try and get the best post recorded sound in all the instruments.
there's obviously way more to it than that

Is there a metal album that gets a bad rating on Sputnik?
|
| |
There are plenty.
"producer kinda dictates the recording session and get's levels right for the off the floor stuff, helps the band with songs and arrangements and whether a take was good or not"
o ya I knew that one
"engineers I think work under the producers and help with the soundboard"
Didn't know that one
"mixing is done after the recordings are finished to basically bring all the levels out equally and try
and get the best post recorded sound in all the instruments."
cool!

mixing is a type of audio engineering. the engineers are the technical dudes who fiddle with the soundboard, whereas producers usually aren't, however the two jobs aren't mutually exclusive.

Gotta say this is fantastic, the slow melancholy proggy parts are so lush and pretty yet ominous as hell.
Loving the polyrhythmic grooves too, especially within the drums (who's the drummer? He rules).
Can only tell its gonna grow with repeated listen too, Digital Gerrymandering and the Unlikely Event standout at the minute.

are these guys still considered post-metal?

Maybe some of their earlier stuff, like on Valley Of Smoke? This I'd definitely consider mainly prog metal though.
