The lumps of anecdotal evidence pointing towards the barbarism and fanatical zeal of statist Shōwa Japan in this thread has been scattershot, but it points toward the fact that context (geo-political, religious etc.) and timing are central to motivations. For example it is impossible to imagine English soldiers in World War II doing bayonet charges for Winston Churchill. If you look at the tradition in feudal Japan, Shinto and Bushido, you get a straight line to what the Japanese and only the Japanese were doing. It's essentially a science experiment where you can point toward variables and see them in action. The political state of the country was unhealthy, it revolved around crazy nationalism, dogmatic quasi-religious devotion to the Emperor and a suicidal honour code. It's beyond there just being some bad eggs.

You can make a broader argument about human nature, that we are all essentially the same and it is racist to discriminate and generalize- that is of course true. The argument I just made works under that assumption- and that it is instead external and not something innately wrong about Japanese people. Being borne out of contagious, backward ideology and culture is where otherwise good people find themselves doing bad things.

I would also note that there were quite few supporters and sympathizers of Nazis back in the day in the U.S. and the U.K (e.g. IBM supplying the bureaucratic machinery for the holocaust to them vis-a-vis Switzerland).



It also boggles my mind some people still romanticize that bullshit (I've heard soldiers say dumb shit like "at least they respected soldiers back in the day and I've heard stories from my family of political functionals who said it wasn't that bad!")

I wasn't really arguing for or against the racist factor I was just stating the bottom line as far as I'm concerned



sure geo-political and cultural factors will have an impact on the how and the why of barbarism - that's why they're called factors - but it's not fair to say they're what caused them in the first place. The only thing that really begets violence is previous violence, which itself was caused by previous violence, and so on and so on.
