Fantano is just a person, just like anyone else. He just rates stuff based on how much he likes that band's particular sound, rather than the actual merit of the album. It's nothing different from how any Joe Schmo reviews an album. I would give any Blink 182 a big, fat thumbs down because I hate their sound. Doesn't make them a bad band, they're just not to my taste.

I agree but at the same time he's a pretty well known music reviewer and for some reason this review seemed to lack any sort of "professional" criticism towards the album. Not bashing him for his opinion just didn't like his reasoning behind his score

There is no sense in ratings that low for this album. I can see as low as maybe a 3.5 if you're not into the scene but a 2 and lower is ridiculous.
Fantano sucks. I know some people take his reviews as word of god, but he really sucks. Sometimes I think he gives scores as low as he does just for shock value, and I'm pretty sure his opinions aren't all his. He probably gets some inspirations from other sites and magazines just from how fast he rolls out reviews. This album is pretty highly rated on rym and on here. The only places giving it mehh reviews are professional critic sites (where I think he gets inspiration), but this is just a hunch lol.
I'm pretty sure he doesn't even like emo, so why is he reviewing an emo album?

He gave Harmlessness a 7 so I'm pretty sure he likes some emo music.

yeah he's pretty inconsistent with the emo genre. he seems to dislike emo revival bands with TWIABP being an exception

I think these guys are way better than TWIABP at least in execution and in writing tracks that stand out. I need to rate this album, but I'm having a really hard time with deciding.

I've never heard this album before but I thought he did a good job justifying his opinion on it, didn't seem unprofessional at all.

It's just his opinion man, people can dislike highly rated albums, I often disagree with Fantano but it is interesting to hear other people's opinions on music I'm interested in even if those opinions aren't the same.
