Hahaha I know but it makes sense for me, I've been gravitating towards this stuff over time in my metal. Everything this sets out to do is incredible, the black metal elements seamlessly blended with the soaring beauty of the overall sound, which makes for affecting and stunningly naturalistic atmospheres like The Mantle by Agalloch, but still very different. The lyrical themes and overall imagery are perfect as well.

i suppose the biggest difference between something like this and say, the mantle, is that the mantle had such a strong and distinct sense of melody that drew me in. this is what i feel panopticon has been missing for me. the melody seems so buried and hazy that i struggle to decipher the emotional side of the compositions.

I mean all of Agalloch's albums, except maybe Serpent, rely heavily on melody to carry much of the extended compositions. Like I said this is very different, at face value it's typical Panopticon with that soaring, naturalistic, beauteous black metal sound he always uses, except here I believe it's executed in the most effective and powerful way. It's vaguely structured like a blackgaze record, but stylistically sounds very different than many of those kinds of albums.

yeah, i think that's why panopticon isn't for me. i really crave a strong sense of melody.

Well, to be fair the Mantle was the Agalloch album with the least amount of BM influence still left in there so that is a really odd comparison.

If you were to compare this to Saor now, that would be a different story.

i only made that comparison because it was just mentioned by someone else [:

saor is far more melody driven than this so it stands to reason i like it a LOT more

Yeah this is a heck of a lot like Saor, just executed a little bit better in my opinion.

Yeah, this is better than anything Saor has ever done, though I like all Saor records a lot.

I actually like both equally but within a different context.

But I also think that this and Roads are the best Panopticon albums.

[3] Saor is a better comparison anyway, I only mentioned The Mantle because of the naturalistic atmosphere it had that this reminded me of.

Saor destroys any individual Panopticon album it's not even close.

haha haaaaaaaaaaaard disagree with that. i really enjoy Saor but i think that goes too far, plus they are friends and you can definitely see where saor takes influence from panopticon

plus lunn did aura's drums :]
