If this was a new band coming out with That's The Spirit as their first album, I feel like it'd be a guilty pleasure. Something I'd listen to when I didn't want to listen to something heavy and just chill. My biggest wonder is what are they going to be doing live now? Having slow singalongs to Doomed with their legions of new fans who also listen to 5SOS and McBusted (as they're the other 'rock-pop' bands who might share fans with these now) and then roll into something like Chelsea Smile and scare the crap outta the newbies?

I enjoyed the album as it is, but I agree that with Sempiternal gaining them so much respect from people who have always seen them as "MySpace scene queens" that they would take Sempiternal's formula and run with it, adding to it, tweaking it until they became brilliant with it. I'm sure there was enough singalongs to Sempiternal at shows but I feel like to see them live now would be bland.

Haha. Good first comment, and I legitimately wondered the same thing. Then I thought they'd just axe their old shit and play stuff from the last two and that'd be it.
No more "AFTER ALL THE SHIT YOU PUT ME THROUGH, I SHOULD'VE FUCKIN' PISSED ON YOU!"

the album version of drown sounds a lot like a thirty seconds to mars song, right at the beginning mostly
edit: wait i tried comparing it to the old version and it sounds pretty much the same, dunno how i never made that connection earlier

Damn "Doomed" is such a good song though. Wish they had pursued more of that direction with the sound of this album.

I listened to this album once and quite a few songs from it are not all that great, they're forgettable. "True Friends" isn't all forgettable, but that's mainly because it's pretty damn terrible.
Very disappointed with this album, I was hoping they'd continue with the sound they had with "Throne" and "Happy Song", but I guess there's a couple other songs that are somewhat decent.
So sadly, it doesn't top Sempiternal or Suicide Season for me. It doesn't even top There Is A Hell... and I thought that album wasn't all that great. It's better than Count Your Blessings though, that's for fucking sure! Shit album, so glad they moved away from that crap.

Whoa. There Is a Hell and Sempiternal ruled.
If you want more like Happy Song and Throne, you might wanna check out Bullet For My Valentine's Temper, Temper. That's what the first half of this album felt like, save for Doomed.
Happy Song and Throne are two of the major shitters of this album... And True Friends. Bleh

"Ollie has fully unleashed his vocal talents on this."
Son, just no.
What atmosphere? Boredom? It did good at making me feel bored, so props.

This is one of the very few cases that a band's sound going through a major change is beneficial. Almost all of the songs are powerful enough to be singles and I see no problem with that at all. I hear nothing generic on this album; every song is unique and has it's own message.

I think the negativity around the album is because of (metaphorically speaking) BMTH started off bringing shitty Fosters beer to you with their early stuff. Then they brought something a lot better like Kronenberg 1664 with SS and TIAH. Then for Sempiternal it's like they brought an IPA, full of different flavours and a risk that some people would love and others would hate. In comparison it's like That's The Spirit is water. Yeah sure water is nice and for people who hate beer it's a lot better and gets the job done but the flavours that were there before aren't anymore.
(I had a few beers last night)

"How did you not get absorbed into the melodic delivery of "I think we're doomed" with the laid back instrumentation and echoed vocals on "Doomed", or the string driven barrage on "Avalanche."
I just don't get the negativity surrounding this album, it's easily their best"
I feel the same way about those songs but don't think this album is worth a 5. And to call this their best makes me ask if you even listened to Sempiternal because Sempiternal is this album on steroids and There is a Hell is just as good as Sempiternal in a different way
