It's painfully amateur in the worst ways for bm.

every time something good happens on this album, something else happens that totally undercuts it

I'm surprised that Garm put his stamp of approval on something this mediocre and banal. It also amuses me that it's a big part of the marketing push for this album despite his vocal attempts to distance himself from the black metal genre for the past 20 years.

I am really proud to be involved, to help her make her vision come to life, and also to have her carry the torch, so to speak. I think it’s a killer album and I’m anxious to see what people think. ~ Garm (http://www.stereogum.com/1805597/) (He also helped produce the record.)

on one hand, that just makes me like and respect garm even more, since he must have a unique vantage point and understanding of how sexist the industry (and especially metal, and black metal even moreso) can be, so his endorsement carries a lot of weight and must mean a lot to him
on the other hand, come on man

i mean to be fair the production on the classic ulver albums is pretty junk too, so I kinda get why he'd confuse this for a "good" sound. Tee hee

the production is the least of this album's worries

"how sexist the industry (and especially metal, and black metal even moreso)"
Disagree on singling out BM. Metal in general needs work but BM certainly isn't one of the worst offenders. If we were talking racism or homophobia then that would be a diff story
|
| |
But we all know why Garm agreed to this project
if you catch my drift
|
| |
god those guitar tones are so weak.
Production on early Ulver recs is fine with me. Although, Nattens is pretty compressed, it does make it's charm

black metal is extremely male dominated. i can't think of a single other female black artist besides myrkur. there are certainly women in black metal bands (albeit usually in a keyboard/backing vocals / cleans role). it must have been nightmarishly difficult for her to even begin breaking into the scene in this fashion
that said, you're right in that other genres probably aren't much better. let's say that by "black metal moreso", I mean it's even more difficult to gain recognition in black metal than, say, heavy or power metal
if you catch my drift ;]

There's a woman who died most the work in this BM group Lucifugum. She joined around 2002 when a member quit an another passed away. An I think Opera IX has a female vocalist.
|
| |
She does have an amazing voice. I would love to see a collab between her and Garm.
|
| |
I've never even heard a song by her, I'm here cause she's opening for Behemoth an I need to find out if her set is worth catching
|

Astarte is all female as well afaik. Aghast were a pretty cool duo of women making Dark Ambient that had close ties to the BM scene in the 90s.
There's a lot of room for improvement, no argument there but it's hard to judge how much of the problem is due to "sexism" and how much has to do with lack of interest from women in starting a BM band/playing a leading role in a BM band.

@doom yeah that is kind of my point though, those are edge cases, with barely any exposure. hell, both of those bands have barely 20 ratings put together on this site
i agree simon. i think it's also hard to say how much of that lack of interest is due to metal/black metal being an undesirable environment to put yourself into as a woman

That song the girl was playing in that "Metalhead" movie was fucking great though, I wonder who wrote it.

Opera IX was not the best black metal band in the world, but those vocals on The Black Opera (2000) blew my mind to hear a female doing black metal.
I've listened to this album a few times and it really is not as bad as people say it is IMO. Nothing mind blowing but probably a 3.5 for me. It definitely has some enjoyable parts.
