Not terribly impressed with this album. Definitely lacking a lot of what made the last two records great. Still very good and a few of the tracks are just wonderful. The record as a whole is way too samey, especially Parker's vocal delivery.

Yeah, it gets pretty fucking sterile by the end. I like it a lot at parts, but it can feel like an endurance test.

i adore his vocals on most of this. the vocal melody in past life is so fucking annoying though. tried to like it multiple times but couldn't

i wish his other albums were produced this well. i can even make it through some of the boring parts of this album because even they sound awesome

True. I think this deserves another listen though. Just not head over hills as of now.

"Someone needs to tell modern indie artists that spoken word tracks don't have to be terrible."

Spoken word tracks are shit most of the time no matter what though

See, now. That's not true. And I blame artists like this that people think that.

i have so many mixed feelings about kevin parker's songwriting here that i may end up writing them into a review (or a ranty blog post) but i agree with you on so many levels here, Rudy.

i saw pitchfork's 9.3 after listening to Currents and for a moment i started to wonder whether the copy that i got was filled with all the b-sides instead of the actual thing. i'd give it a 3.5/or 7 personally, it's like a solid c album.

If he could keep up the quality level of "Let it happen" this would be incredible. But the songwriting is just a bit messy and all over the place. I dig the new direction though, especially since i felt that the difference in sound between "Innerspeaker" and "Lonerism" was minimal.

I love the record. The songs have personality, aren't just pumped out rock jams. Production is top notch, great lyrics, I understand I'm in the minority but I thoroughly enjoy this from front to back and can appreciate the vision that went into this.

9.3 on pitchfork, 8/10 NME, fantano 7/10, good average on RYM and sputnik... just off the top of my head it seems to be pretty well regarded. A bit of backlash is pretty much a given when a popular artists changes his style this drastically.
