I'm taking music theory right now, and while some aspects of it are somewhat easy to comprehend, other areas confused the hell out of me. So yeah, I'm not aiming to become a jazz elitist anytime soon. I'm also taking piano lessons, but that's mostly because I've heard by many that it's easy to transfer skills from piano to other instruments.

Yeah, I love the vocals on it, and the peppy feel to track really allows it to stand out. The Rhythm Changes too. If that's the same vocalist on both tracks, I'd totally be down for a full album by her.

the reason most people don't criticize jazz or classical is cause they're damn ignorant and they know it. to actually talk about classical/jazz and be taken seriously you actually have to understand music theory, which takes time/effort. in addition, once you do know, you sound like a prick every time you talk about classical or jazz to most other people. considering they're not very relevant genres, it'd be like a layman teaching himself how to read and write sanskrit. well, now he can provide an alternate exegesis of the mahabharata but who's he going to talk to about it?
whole lot of bullshit going on in here

wait, so I'm not a jazz expert?

i wasnt even referring to you chill the fuck out steamboy
its just preposterous as fuck to put jazz on this un-touchable pedestal that only jazz musicians can criticize or understand while also saying that its not relevant and comparing it to fucking mahavishnahuvashnu scripts and say that u can only critique these kinds of music if you are an expert but also then u are pretentious and no one will want to talk to you
there is so much bullshit going on here i dont even know where to begin
its just jazz. its music. jazz isnt made strictly for other jazz musicians. ask anyones fucking grandma and them and everyone they know grew up listening to jazz and most of them dont know music theory. with exposure you can gain enough knowledge to appreciate it and make criticisms. i dont know shit about music theory and me and my buddy who is an excellent jazz musician and just finishing up school for it have conversations about jazz records all the time. this isnt high-art for transcendental god-beings, its music. anyone can enjoy it and anyone can talk about it.

art should be democratized but how is understanding classical music, which is mostly founded on traditional music theory, and many of whose pieces are simply intended as technical exercises, not in some way predicated on some basic understanding of music theory
jazz is based way less in that, true, but it's not like what i said is complete bullshit
i'm not saying you can't talk about, enjoy, or understand either of those genres without having majored in music, i'm saying knowing music theory goes a long way to giving you the language to talk about them in detail and make comparisons between records within the genre

>jazz is based way less in that, true
false. both improvisation and composition in jazz are almost entirely based on music theory
