not as boring as repeating the same bad opinion over and over

agreed, your repetitively bad opinions are 1.5/5 this is a light 3/5, your observation is astute.

wow potsy has a contrarian opinion i never would have guessed???

that would imply im being contrary for the sake of being contrary which is a useful deflection (or at least as useful as yaks go to deflection evident by his previous comment) that one might utilize if they are insecure enough about their feelings for an album to not be able to recognize its flaws and see how someone else might not like it. but that bullshit aside, my reasoning is sound - i was anticipating further flourishes into an area akin to Age of Adz which was the first Sufjan album I appreciated with its quirky and eclectic electronics and colourful soundscapes but alas this is but a regression to pretty standard indie folk stuffs with a distinct lack of the distinguishing characteristics that finally attracted me to sufjan with AoA and his collabs with son lux. The album could easily be characterized as derivative if not for the somewhat appealing atmospheric qualities that keep you clinging on to each song expecting some grand creative flourish before each songs end, but it just never quite happens leaving me less than satiated by the albums close. Album could have been a lot more if he hadn't kept himself refined to the inside of the box he fashioned for himself with albums previous to illonois but instead it just comes off as a 'nice' listen and not much more. is it sufjan returning to his roots, or sufjan failing to be so much more?! YOU decide!

3/5

It sounded amazing at first, but I got tired of it soon after. It could've been a lot more. Still, solid 3.5.

this is somewhat more accurate as i am all for debate and developed insights into things. the one flaw here being that on this website the large majority can't handle any deviance in thought or opinion and critically analyzing music they like is taken as an offensive chore instead of a useful and entertaining opportunity to understand it better.

I also think it's worth pointing out that Potsy is far from the only person that had a meh reaction to this

It's OK to dislike this, don't think anyone was trying to imply otherwise. I respect all your reasons except the implication that the directional change came counter to what you were expecting; they've been hyping his return to folk roots for as long as I can remember hearing about this record. If you dislike said direction, though, then that's just how you feel which is cool.

i dont dislike it i think it is nice. as for the latter comment i wasnt referring to you but since this album came online there have been many users who are very NOT OKAY with people not liking this.

well it did come counter to what i was expecting considering i never read anything hyping his return to folk roots. i wasn't really following the lead up to this release so my expectations were purely influenced by what he has been doing with AoA and his collabs in between.

Well see most of us staff ride Sufjan's dick like there's no tomorrow, so you have to excuse our defensiveness.

i'm sure you know i don't care whether you like this or not. i'm just absolutely stunned that you are once again repeatedly interjecting into a thread of an album you don't care for. and i'm sure will continue to do for many pages to come
