not a fan of the overly poppy sound

I'd rather that than more throwback prog

The album is excellent but I really want Steven to play more guitars. I know he did the 90% of the recording process and recorded this with amazing guitarists but his style is so distinctive, it's what makes his music sound his own, and there's less and less of it with each record.

^ He's got loads of talent, and it's frustrating how he's just now starting to channel it outside of the boundaries of 70s prog (excluding Porcupine Tree; just solo music).

I do agree with what you mean, that he's back to a musical identity that is his own, even though I like The Raven very much as well. But personally, I've never considered Insurgentes and Grace as within the boundaries of 70s prog worship. Surely, both albums certainly bear influences from classic prog, but I think he adapted those influences well enough to a more modern context.

Yeah, you both have good points but lets be serious here... we don't want stevie to end up like Dream Theater just because it's his identity

I haven't voiced my opinion on Steven Wilson yet, but after jammin PT's discog I'm throwing my 2 pennies in. The guy is very creative no doubt, but it's not like he used to be this untouchable innovator and now he is a hack. He has always shown his influences and is still as relevant as ever, be it sounding like Ozric Tentacles, Pink Floyd, King Crimson, Portishead, or a mix thereof.

Yea it's not like he's of the influence of anyone from PF or anything, but the dude sure can play and write amazing songs.

This album is absolutely fantastic. I honestly was nervous for this record because I was imagining Steven Wilson falling into the rut of repeating jazzy, proggy albums. Boy was I glad that SW went a different direction with "Hand. Cannot. Erase." Can't wait to see them live in LA! If you're a fan of them or this type of music, be sure to check out my music blog: http://goo.gl/vUkHtF

I need to write something so that this thread won't end with this ^ comment. Jammed this again today. Did good to give this a 4 and not a 4.5. It's excellent, but not that much.

I really fucking hate the concept realisation. Everything is so simplistic (half of the lyrics, that stupid blog).. I mean when somebody states a disc is a 'concept' for me it's truly a make it or break it - it can raise tremendously my consideration of the disc or just kill it. Guess how it went with this one.
Plus, a concept disc based on the life of a female human being, you hire a female singer and you let her sing what, two minutes out of 60? You may as well just sing it all yourself, stevie

That's not the point - I'm not complaining about the music btw, it's the usual solid SW stuff. I was complaining about the concept. I'd say I'd rate it 3.5 (on par with Grace for Drowning) if I didn't dislike the concept so much

The concept is fumbled a bit, but don't fret, he made a limited edition deluxe book for his cash-paying die-hards! That's what matters ;]

i found the concept rather enthralling tbh
a popular young woman dies in her flat in london and nobody notices her passing for three years? her family, her friends? even administrative bodies or neighbours didn't witnessed something odd? thats really eerie if you ask me. says a lot about our society of today.
u know that really happened right?

@Flugmorph but the actual album is not that story. It was just inspired by it. The actual album is just a silly girl living her life in isolation. No one dies and nothing interesting happens.
