True that, it just makes you a souless fucker who hasn't lived and as a result can't craft a proper tune.

I mean it's just a tool that helps. But if the craftsman is a Downie with cerebral palsy, he won't be able to use that tool to any good effect.

Music theory doesn't suck. It's nigh impossible to compose anything jazzy without knowing music theory, as you'll be naturally inclined towards simpler melodies and progressions.

But yeah, it doesn't make you a good songwriter by default.
