but ya i mean traditionally indie rock people hate prog rock and heavy metal, never quite understood but its been the law of christgau for aeons. at least dude's not just insta1-ing everything, zappa is pretty alienating music and you kinda have to already be into prog to dig it or else its just fart noises

I also like both prog and indie rock

"and the two albums I heard have been the opposite of alienating"

Like I said, both Hot Rats and Apostrophe are part of his more commercial releases. He gets hella weird on some of his other classics. Good example would be Absoutely Free, Weasels Ripped My Flesh, Jazz from Hell, and my favorite album of all time We're Only in It for the Money

Though if you wanna stay on the commercial route, The Grand Wazoo is similar to Hot Rats, and Over-Nite Sensation is similar to Apostrophe (but better and features Tina Turner)

@Sonic: interesting opinion on Malkmus, and kinda funny since Cobain HATED being famous

Too bad Cobain couldn't trade his fame to Malkmus

Okay I disagree and LOVE You Are What You Is, but yeah it's deff part of his "trying to actively shock people" period so it's tough for some people, but I like the gospel and soul elements, and find it genuinely hilarious

something about malkmus's cool hipster air seemed calculated to me but i guess its no more or less calculated than some metal musician who talks about satan a lot

I just hate how apathetic he sounds, it's like he hates his own songs

You're saying you think it's a manufactured thing? That makes it even worse

What about PJ Harvey? she's down to Earth as hell in her interviews

And also the best indie rocker ever

well yeah i mean pavement have this rep as being the purest of the pure but it always felt like he took elements of sonic youth/dino jr/pixies etc and took out any offputting noisey elements and hyperfocused on the 2 minute pop song. to be fair thurston moore always sang like he didnt want to be in the room (no surprise that this junior rockstar had a career ending midlife crisis) but i always thought malkmus took that to the extreme and basically birthed the stereotypical portlandia indie vibe

Yeah I get how Thurston kinda sounds apathetic, but it was never extreme enough for tick me off like with Malkmus

I actually like the "slacker" vibe most of the time

i guess it just seems like you watch an interview from headbangers ball and its usually "yeah man the album drops in august and we hit the road in september. its gonna be a blast" but you watch an interview from 120 minutes and its just awkward, a sea of flannel and moptops staring at their shoes, obnoxiously chewing gum, putting on then taking off sunglasses ironically. the token female in the band wears a shirt that says "CORPORATE SLUT." its like the homerpalooza episode

I mean there was that one interview where Thurston Moore interviews and Beck and Beck throws his shoe randomly to piss off Thurston...

you know this album was a 3.5 for me at first but once i got heavily into zappa i sort of zeroed in on the music more. like i know people say this album is accessible but i had an easier time getting into one size fits all, zoot allures, some of the others
