Dev was born onto a '90 'soundscape' flyer somewhere in a field in Essex UK having been conceived in the back of a Ford Cosworth the previous year.

I'd bet me life on it.

"Really? You think I'm "reaching" over an album that presents its theme of mortality with a sardonic smile? That treats death as a blood and guts spectacle (all the artwork) and has Captain Murphy laughing menacingly in the background? To each their own, but you're putting a limit on what can be interpreted from music, which completely goes against the point of interpretative themes and concepts"

well, i can't really respond to this anymore because i initially read 'irreverent' as 'irrelevant' so now the context has changed. before when i thought you said irrelevant i thought you were being hyper critical of something as inconsequential as an exclamation mark. my bad

Care to explain why? Sure, it's a bit hard to follow but it's hardly poorly written.

"That Flylo's latest LP should find its title cut to ribbons with the terminality of an exclamation mark says a lot about the way Ellison has approached the subject matter at hand. It presents the impression of an irreverent remark, a curiously morbid reminder, that alternately seems fascinated by, and laughs at, the prospect of shuffling off this mortal coil. While lying at the opposite end of the spectrum, this celebration of limbo is still a natural extension, and perhaps the integral chapter, to the producer's detailing (and understanding) of life's structurally unforgiving cycle. As if to make mockery of such a linear continuum, You're Dead! attempts to find a counterpoint to Miles Davis' reckless disregard for what jazz was supposed to be and sound like."

this paragraph reeks of pretentiousness and it was the point at which i realized it. unnecessarily complicated wording and transitions which don't flow at all or make sense in context. maybe the views expressed here are valid but it's too bad you have to read it 5 times to understand them.

I don't think that point would work if it was written in any other form. Besides, that one paragraph doesn't make the entire thing a bad review but I will agree that it took more than one read to fully understand

nice one. i wish to be as intelligent as you one day. the school that you went to must have taught you how to write with a thesaurus.

agreed writing with a thesaurus nearby can be a very helpful, practical tool in school when your diction is feeling stale and you'd like to expand your vocabulary

Writing without a thesaurus doesn't make you the BEST MOST REAL REVIEWER EVURRRR anyway. I don't see why one can't have it nearby

the wording isn't "unnecessarily complicated" you're just stupid

I swear every time someone makes a case for a review being pretentious it's just a case of a reader acting out because the review made them feel dumb. "terminality? irreverent? pfff I don't understand this at all, pretentious!!!"

it's one of those things like "organic" or "gmo" that people throw around without actually knowing the real definition

yeah sure, except how the hell does this sentence seem natural in any way what-so-ever - "It presents the impression of an irreverent remark, a curiously morbid reminder, that alternately seems fascinated by, and laughs at, the prospect of shuffling off this mortal coil."

does it need to sound natural? it's a piece of writing and sometimes effort is made to construct gripping sentences and solid word choices. it's a good piece of writing that communicates its point perfectly if you aren't caught up on words that you feel are unnatural.

and I mean it doesn't even sound "unnatural", maybe to people with stunted vocabulary it could come across that way, but most understand and use words like that regularly. it's not pretentious to use the word irreverent if that's the word that articulates your point. it's arrogant to accuse someone of being pretentious because they used a word above the level that you are comfortable with or deem appropriate for music reviews.
