band is great but never understood the "Morrison is an incredible poet" fans. Had a few not bad lines but most of his lyrics I remeber either don't make sense (and not in a dadaistic way) or are a "love me two times/you're lost little girl" kind of thing, which is hardly impressive.

Honestly, his best song poetry wise is probably "Not to Touch the Earth" do you know that one?

I don't know if he's an incredible poet (because I know shit about poetry) but his lyrics combined with his articulation and enunciation and of course his overall presence make him one of the greatest vocalists for me.

@Titan he sure has some iconic lines (my fav being "cancel my subscription to the resurrection") and yes, @manosg, he is one of the best when it comes to charisma and voice but with lyrics themselves he's well behind people such as Hammill, Dylan, Cave, Beefheart etc.

@Ars I don't remember his 1968-1970 period too well (not first-class stuff), but just hard the song and well, it's ok for sure but nothing great IMO.

Show me the way
To the next whiskey bar
Oh don't ask why
Oh don't ask why
For if we don't find
The next whiskey bar
I tell you we must die
I tell you we must die

Come on, baby, light my fire
Come on, baby, light my fire
Try to set the night on fire, yeah

You men eat your dinner, eat your pork and beans
I eat more chicken any man ever seen, yeah yeah

i looked at you
you looked at me
i smiled at you
you smiled at me (!!!)

Think that you know what to do,
Impossible yes, but it's true
I think that you know what to do, yeah,
Sure that you know what to do

Love me two times, baby,
Love me twice today;
Love me two times, girl,
I'm goin' away
Love me two times, girl,

What I'm trying to highlight is that usually he chooses trivial topics and relies a lot on simple repetition. Even Steven Wilson shows more ambition in these departments.

You picked an awful example since Alabama Whiskey Bar is a cover, one of the only 2 songs he covered on the 6 studio albums... others include Back Door Man and Crawling King Snake.

Wouldn't that be three covers? Haha

Their cover of Howlin' Wolf's "Back Door Man" is so stinkin' good.
