I would also agree with SC and FII being the lowest of their catalog, and I don't mind the debut that much because the musical focus was wonderful. It would be the sixth best DT album if they had LaBrie.

s/t is the worst, without a doubt

this is the last good Dream Theater album anyway

ToT and BC&SL are both pretty good

Only the vocals were bad on the s/t, as they weren't right for metal at all.

Train of Thought was good

No way, the melodies were pretty bland and far too cheesy too. The songwriting was pretty bland and all the subtleties that used to make them great were one. The Enemy Inside was alright, but other than that, it was horrific

Sorry, my mistake, I was mixing WDaDU with the s/t, my bad.

Oh fair enough, yeah I see how you can get those two mixed up. So you're saying that you thought the s/t had a lot of musical focus?

Not nearly on the level of the debut, no.

Never listened to the debut, aside from the Ytsejam. it's the fact that LaBrie isn't on it which is holding me back and it just wouldn't sound right hearing DT without LaBrie

the vocals on wdadu are so weak that it's not even funny

Instrumentally they were on a better track than now though. I remember reading how Mike Portnoy said that album's singer Dominici was in the wrong band, and I think that is why this site treats it worse than SC and FII, same with the Symphony X debut.

idk why but DT just irks me the wrong way for the most part. I think I like only around 3 of their albums

Do you feel that way about prog metal in general? The other two major pioneers have a fair amount of differences.
|
| |
in general not at all. I dig prog metal for the most par, just DT isn't what I'd call a spectacular band. They have their flashes of brilliance (Metropolis and Images and Words) but for the most part they just bore me

DT are the worse of the other 2 pioneers and don't dive into any other styles or genres. They're also the most inconsistent as em pointed out

That's a monumental claim considering Queensryche just recovered from a 16 year career abyss of medicore albums (OM II) to god-awful albums (DtC).

I probably say that cos I listen to DT the most. They're actually very consistent to say the least
