Every album throws a curveball at you. It's been too long since i last jammed their discog but i remember Jazz being their most experimental album.. I might be wrong though. Their 80's stuff is also progerssive but in a more conventional way and much more "poppy".

^So that's "progressive" in the sense of progressing stylewise instead of writing longer songs? Well, I could enjoy that, if the quality is there

What i really admire in queen was their ability to produce at least one megahit (and not just for the sake of sales) per album. Even in their shittiest days they could write great songs.

What they lacked though imo, was consistency

Oh, I get it. They're this kind of band. Okay, this is kind of good and kind of sucks at the same time.

In a sense that their approach is less experimental and more straightforward comparared to their music in the 70's. AND all that filtered through the the 80's pop-wave and aura. But make no mistake, for they sound nothing like your regular 80's pop rock band.

I will try to elaborate a bit more. Queen is an awesome band. They wrote mega-hits that were also interesting and inventive songs. And they always included melodies in their songs, something which i always like to hear in my music. Each album contains great songs but also bad ones. "Bad" in a sense that i cannot feel a connection with the sounds-approach-vocals-transitions-atmosphere you name it. They have so many songs that make me feel like i'm listening sth that is truly superb and inventive but they also have a lot of weird songs that they make me think of "WHAT THE FUCK THEY WERE THINKING HERE". They also have a lot of boring songs and even their most enjoyable albums have no replay value to me. That's problematic. It meanes i find no reason at all to return and listen to the damn thing.

Still, hats off to them cause i'm not a professional musician and i cannot "understand" or "get" it. And maybe that's the point. No matter what though, i'm not obligated to like it.

Yea, I get this. I have this exact feeling with A Night At The Opera. There are awesome songs like The Prophet's Song and there is other stuff that's definetly solid, but just not my kind of thing. It's a little like they're a little too versatile for their own good, if that makes sense, haha

It makes sense.

Mark my words though, do not let my opinion discourage you, they still are a great band that everyone needs to listen and experience. This is just a man's opinion. Check them out and find for your self.

This is the problem with modern rock music. We've gotten so used to bands being firmly entrenched in a certain genre and consistently churning out songs with a particular sound that we're easily frustrated by bands that don't do exactly that.

Well, that opinion came from someone who doesn't listen to modern rock music. I have no idea what it actually sounds like, so your theory does not apply to me.

Naah man, it wasn't a personal attack. It was a general comment about something like Queen or Led Zep or the Police not just playing one style of music. I've definitely felt it too and it's because most of us have gotten used to listening to records and having a band just sort of use the same general template throughout instead of taking real risks and writing weird songs that aren't just all hard rock, or melodic metalcore or whatever.

I never said you attacked me and even if you had, you did in the right way (without throwing insults)

I honestly think that there is a fine line between what we consider conventional, experimental as there is also a certain limit at which we stop seeing a piece as "experimental" and we start see it as pure shit :P

That's why we're not professional musicians though. Those who really dwelve into the musical realm, and compose, see things quite differently.

Well, I kind of am a professional musician. Not a full time musician, but a dedicated part-time professional and it's a problem I've faced with my own band's music. We play basically rock, but with elements of metal, jazz, reggae and whatever else we feel like putting when we're writing.

But this is confusing to people because when we play shows with metal bands audiences are confused because we're not metal all the time, whereas when we play shows with rock bands people are a bit put off because we're too heavy for them. It's a bit of a conundrum.

Giving this my 2400th comment, because it's my favourite Queen so far.

Also I definetly enjoy band with a very diverse palette of styles a lot. I don't know what exactly makes Queen a little inconsistent even on their early material, but their records feel a little more disjointed, because three people can be the lead singers. I'm not saying it's bad or anything, but it contributes to this feeling.

Finally giving this a rating. It's amazing how many albums bands out out back in the day. Today albums tend to be longer, but overall there seemed to be a larger output. The pressure for more touring is eating the modern bands' creativity.

However, this is my favourite Queen album so far

It is reasonable to tour a lot if you're a modern rock band though. Producing records won't guarantee you any income. You need to hit the road.

Yep, that's very true, unfortunately. I think a lot of bands would rather write new material if they had a choice. Also touring is really harsh on the singer's voice. It's a shame, even though it forces bands to be actually good live bands
