I would check out Countdown to Ecstasy, Aja, and Two Against Nature. Those are the band's most prog/fusion-based albums, and they tend to be extremely complex by jazz rock standards (though Aja certainly has its poppier moments)

Ah I see what you mean with that link. I've never heard later Steely Dan albums.

It's all good. The later Dan albums saw them perfecting their craft in the studio rather than touring, and their jazz elements increased exponentially as a result. Personally, I think Two Against Nature is their most underrated record; that's the one where their jazz fusion elements were fully fleshed out

SD although influenced by jazz is more pop and rock, I would never confuse or think that steely dan is a jazz fusion band. The are a rock band with jazz sensibilities

I'm not really saying Steely Dan are a fusion band, but rather a jazz rock with touches of fusion here and there. To quote my Two Against Nature review:
"The 70s Dan albums always flirted with jazz classics, but their pop leanings always brought them back under the umbrella of “jazz rock” instead of all-out jazz fusion"
With that said, I do think their jazz influences run much deeper than most of the other jazz rock bands of the day like Chicago and Blood, Sweat & Tears

Man, I've gotta give props to Brian for performing at that age and still sounding good (at least based on the videos I've seen of him recently). Such a legend

Honestly check them up till VII and then check 16/17 if you're curious about their insanely successful 80s pop phase

Introduction is one of those "I don't know what to jam but this will surely do" songs. A Hit by Varese and Goodbye too (Chicago V represent!)

imo 5 and 7 aren't essential *albums* but are def essential checks, if it makes sense. So many excellent cuts. 5 is tight as hell and 7 is big on ambition (first half at least)
Think I've stanned it 7492 times here already but I'll say it again: Goodbye is my fav song of theirs on the right day
