I know this is probably Sput sacrilege, but I like End Codes better than the new Radiohead record

2018 edit: lol I no longer stand by this

Is the new record actually any good? I loved Hollow Ponds but what I've heard of End Codes sounded a little disappointing.

Guess it depends, what did you hear from it? If the singles, I can say they sound a lot better in album context, and even then, they're not among its best tracks. There's a weak song or two on there (as there is on Hollow Ponds), and while its highs aren't quite as high as what's on this, its lows aren't as low either.

Just one guy's opinion though. Giving it a go for yourself couldn't hurt.

agreed, it never gets as poignant as Hollow Ponds but it seems more consistent.

I think ashcrash hit the nail on the head. New album also seems to have a.. more upbeat? sound. idk not completely sure what to think after one listen. I do love civil engineer.

the tunes are a bit more lively on the newy but his vox are just so one-note that it all blurs together a bit

the one-note vox are definitely valid criticism, but man, he gets away with it most of the time cause of the atmosphere imo

new one is definitely more upbeat and less folksy, but its type of dreamy proggy indie pop sort of sound (hopefully that description makes sense) feels like a logical progression from this and I find it just as easy to get lost in even if it's not as emotionally charged as this is

Sowing just want to say thanks for reviewing this like 4 years ago, I remember loving the autumn-esque album art when I saw it featured and have loved the album ever since. It's an October staple for me, especially Flame Exchange & the title track. One of those special little gems that has been mostly forgotten. Never met anyone in real life who has heard of this guy.

Right?! It’s like “dark” indie/folk. Every song makes me think of a cold October night. Can’t say I’ve ever found anything else quite like this.

yeah definitely doesn't sound like every other "indie folk" band. cheers for the rec

the title track was especially fantastic. that instrumentation would be right at home in an atmospheric black metal or neofolk album, ha
