Oh, and it IS pop rock. It's overproduced, boring rock, with nothing standing out instrumentally, or in terms of songwriting. Weezer isn't pop rock. They're more like.. grunge rock, except too late because grunge is essentially dead at the moment.
I don't like Phoenix Ignition very much at all. I'd write that down as one of Thrice's worst songs.

To What End, Ultra Blue, As the Ruin Falls

^ Best Identity Crisis songs. Torch to End all Torches is also excellent.

Illusion of Safety... I dunno... I'll be honest, I think TAITA was better written overall, but I certainly *LOVE* Illusion of Safety.. almost, if not as much. so I'm almost in agreement with you guys. Except about Phoenix Ignition. Bland stuff.
When I first started reading that I thought you were going to be all n00b sauce and be like "their only gud cd is taita lolz!" Identity Crisis is great. The thing about "Phoenix Ignition" is it's about the feeling. It's one of their more classically hardcore songs so the generic part is a no brainer. It's how hard and heartfelt you do your generic romp that makes the song.

Weezer is called in a genre called power pop.

I can think different because it's true. Emo is emotional hardcore and is a genre, which is not defined by crappy lyrics about death and depressing things. There's no hardcore in this music and the "emotional" aspects are rather contrived.

No no no, and again: No! Jimmy Eat World are NOT emo. Pop Rock, Indie Rock, or whatever you want to call it. But JeW are not Emo. Bands like Hot Cross or Fugazi are examples for emo.

If the book states JeW are Emo, it's wrongThis Message Edited On 09.11.05

Well, the statement that JeW is Emo is just false. It's like saying "Iron Maiden is country music" or "Britney Spears is Hardcore Punk". Jimmy eat World have (musically) basically nothing in common with 'real' emo bands.

There are enough people around that can back that up, and some sources on the net.

It's misleading to someone who has never heard the band before. Like Damrod said, if someone thought Iron Maiden was country, then they would be under the impression that they would be like Toby Keith, or someone like that, and wouldn't know what they really are.

Jimmy Eat World isn't emo. They don't resemble emo, at least they don't to me. People automatically attach the word "emo" to music that has a pop-punk feel to it, or where the lyrics happen to be "sappy" or about love and relationships. It's a really frustrating thing when people do this constantly.

I'm not to savvy on genre classifaction but I can understand what your point is. Though it goes over board when people are arguing a ton over tiny sub-genre classifactions (like in the metal threads.).

"With the release of Bleed American and the subsequent success of second single "The Middle", the band found itself at the center of newfound attention to "emo". For most of the 90s, "emo" had been an underground movement that almost completely evaded major label and mainstream control. Nearly every late-90s emo band that signed to a major label broke up before releasing an album. But where Clarity was seen as the quintessential emo album, Bleed American was a step away from that sound, standing closer to mainstream rock. While songs like the title track were certainly emo-influenced, songs like "A Praise Chorus", "The Middle", and "Authority Song" clearly were not. However, since the mainstream media had nowhere else to attach the "emo" label, Jimmy Eat World continued to be referred to as an "emo" band, meaning that the term "emo" began to describe something completely different and more mainstream than what existed in the 90s. Major labels pounced, and began signing bands and releasing music that subscribed to this "new" version of emo."

Yet more proof than what I have read.

I've grown to like this album a lot more than when I first heard it, I still prefer the first album but there are a lot of great songs on this one that have grown on me.

I think The Ghost Of You deserved a higher rating in my eyes, not sure why but I really like the contrast it has with the other songs on the album.

It's quite strange how I like MCR really because I've never ever liked that style of vocals but I immediately liked them after hearing IBYMBYBMYL. I hope I got that acronym right...

My brother owns this, but I find the band to be really annoying. Parts of The Ghost of You are good, but otherwise the album is trash.

Genre classification is not that big a deal. However, emo is probably one of the crappiest genres of music ever, and worst off alot of people for some reason like it. Maybe MCR isn't emo but they're pretty close, and wanting to be emo is just as bad as being it.

Real emo is

Hot Cross, Circle Takes The Square, Fugazi
