J Dilla is incredible though and probably found a way to go Deeper in terms of the emotion suffusing the beat. A few of those beats on Fantastic Vol 1 affect me more greatly than any Kanye beat I guess

brooo come on there's actually one Dilla beat on Be and you can't tell me it sounds out of place with Kanye's beatwork on the rest of the album

I remember Common having pleasant enough beats coupled with a lot of shockingly bad lyrics

Yeah you're right. I think we tend to love the same jazzy hip hop (especially 90s) and hate on the weird experimental garbage from recent years Sput tends to fawn over.

pretty much. my biggest area of disagreement when it comes to hip hop is almost always 00s hip hop anyway as i hate the vast majority of it

not my favorite era either, not going to lie. I hate most of the glossy, uber-polished production.

90's east coast jazz rap is top, plus some west coast standouts like Pharcyde, Freestyle Fellowship, Del Tha Funkee Homosapien etc.

"the minute a bunch of old heads start using electric guitar riffs in their beats" Hell nah, lots of old heads use electric guitar in great beats. How are you gonna fuck with jazz rap and not like electric guitar??? You know those clean jazz guitars are usually ELECTRIC??!??!!

Honestly, though. The takes in this thread were startlingly chaotic and killed me. lmao

Robert what?

Maybe Step Into The Arena and parts of Daily Operation sound a bit dated, A BIT as in you can obv tell they were made in the early 90s pre-hardcore style, but Hard to Earn to One of The Best Yet all sound modern.
