Yeah, sadly I don't think I like Syd's songwriting all that much especially compared to Roger and Gilmour's.

I definitely prefer Gilmour and Waters but Syd was still a legend to me

Syd is a legend, and sadly a casualty to the counterculture lifestyle of the era, and what's really sad about it is that without his fallout Pink Floyd wouldn't be what it is today; there'd be no such thing as Dark Side Of The Moon

That's a most sad truth; if Syd hadn't had his mental breakdown then Floyd wouldn't have realised their potential.

He unconsciously played a serious role for Pink Floyd after his departure.

Exactly, Gilmour would never have joined the band to replace him

It really makes their output that much more powerful.

"He unconsciously played a serious role for Pink Floyd after his departure."
literally, ye the guy was probably unconscious a lot, or at least on a different plane of consciousness

This all might be common knowledge among Floyd fans but like WYWH and Darkside are both nearly complete odes to him or influenced by his mindset and how bad they feel for him and for having to move on without him; taking what he created and turning it into something huge

Yea, the band's incredible.

It was already too big for Syd before he even left the band, he couldn't stand the limelight, for instance he kept them from getting a gig on live television even though the rest of the band was dying to do it. They knew it was the beginning of the end.

It really makes songs like "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" so genuine and touching, as it was an ode to Syd. They said in an interview that as they were recording that song, Syd randomly showed up in the studio out
of nowhere and no one recognized him at first.

^ Yeah everyone's heard that story it's so heartbreaking

Yeah he was like bald and just sitting in the studio. Then he started rubbing what I think was toothpaste on his head, I'm sure then they realized "oh fuck it's Syd". It was while they were recording the title track too ironically enough since it's about him, they were definitely spooked.

No-one really knows which song they were recording when Syd came in, the band members themselves remember it in different ways.

Figures. Regardless, Syd was heavily in all of their minds during that album.
