Record is poor. Too much singing, too little musical meat and too pop-y for my taste.

Just listened to this album again with a friend ('cause I ordered the "20sh anniversary vinyl") and damn, it hits different as an old man.
Incredible piece of music, entire courses should be taught about this album. This is a masterpiece, flaws and all.

"cheesy" yeah - it's characterization; it's an opera.
This album does an amazing job of posing questions about trauma vs letting go, fighting back vs accepting fate. Wicked good. Our MC legitimately did nothing wrong except get hit by a head on collision. His best friend cheated on him with his wife. His father was abusive, his mother was an Oedipus mom; overprotective and demanding. It's not "as bad" as you think it is. Very cool piece of music. Incredibly ambitious and unique. And for one dude to pull off writing and producing this is insane to consider today, let alone in 2004, let alone wrangling all these insanely talented cats. Incredible stuff. Even if, for some reason, you hated this, it's better than probably 97% of the music made in 2004 and is deserving of appreciation for the effort and passion behind it.

Agreed. It was and still is an amazing rock opera, the best by Lucassen, in my book.

Dang, crazy this was just bumped, because I had a random hankering to relisten to this and finally rate it. Absolutely love Arjen’s work and this is definitely near the top.
