You don't really know too much about drumming if you're calling him the best drummer as of now, no fucking way. But I will say this, the guy does what's needed to make the band sound thicker and then some.

"You don't really know too much about drumming if you're calling him the best drummer as of now, no fucking way."
When did I say he is THE BEST? I said he is ONE OF the best. This is a text based site right? When did people forget how to read? Regardless of what you guys think, Mario was voted #1 & 2 on the editors list and members list(212 votes) for "The Top 25 Modern Metal Drummers" by MetalSucks.com. Suffice to say, there is a large audience who agree that he ONE OF the best.
If I seemed harsh in this post, I'm not here to offend anyone. Just here to prove a point.

Then they don't know a whole lot about drumming. You can't trust polls when anyone can vote. If it was a list compiled by a bunch of revered metal drummers themselves, it would be a different thing altogether.

Sigh... 212 #1 votes plus the hundreds more who agree he should be on the list, are a lot of people
who don't know about drumming. You don't have to be a drummer to appreciate quality. Also like I
mentioned, there was a separate list were the editors put Mario in second place. Those dudes, live,
breath, and eat metal. I think they have at least a little credibility.
Secondly, Drumming isn`t just about technicality. If that alone was the deciding factor between the
best instrumentation, I would only be listening to the sea of shitty techdeath bands(not saying they
are all shitty). Abe Cunningham(Deftones) for example is an amazing drummer. Not because of raw
technicality, but because of how predominant he makes the rhythm section FEEL.
I agree, If the list was compiled by metal drummers themselves it could possibly be more accurate.
But... The drummers would vote up their influences and band friends they have made on tours, etc.
Not to mention, the majority of musicians no longer have the time or money to listen to every
release that comes out. This further limits their selection to a smaller pool of bands.

"That's not to say he isn't competent. He certainly is. But his drumming isn't anything out of the ordinairy and it never has been."
-----------------------------
That's bullshit. Just a listen to Mario leads to he is extraordinary.
He has a style that definitely sets him apart.
Why do you even try this nonsense? There are some actual musicians around here.

so true. I always put creativity in front of technicality. and damn the way he plays songs live is just incredible, he hits those drums so damn hard! m/

don´t think this is death metal. isn´t progressive either if you don´t think pantera is progressive. i don´t care. some great shredding and the drummer is excellent, like some people noted already adds a lot of groove - most since pantera. contender for metal album of the year

Its deathinetly not death metal. I haven't had too much time with this album yet, but i don't think its one of the death albums of the year. It does sound pretty sick when I turn it up to a deathening volume though. Death''s for damn sure!

This is also bullshit.
Drums are almost purely technical. There are no modes or chords. One does not worry about harmony...
If you don't have technique as a drummer, you just suck. Go play in the White Stripes.
Technique is VITAL to drumming.

Songwriting is on par with TWOAF, but the originality and experimentalism that had dominated Gojira through their entire career is gone. They now have a style that they play without experimenting. Gojira fans will find a bunch of great Gojira songs here but they won't find anything "new".

Songwriting is sometimes more important than techniques. You might be able to play extremely fast or very technical, but not many drummers can write drum parts which really stands out or is still technical and goes perfectly with the glow with songs. Nowadays, most bands have some UltraDrummer v.420,000 who can play very fast and technical, but fail to write impressive drum parts.

u no n album sux when an experimental prog deth band suddenly JUST STOPS experimenting

I'm sure they could play the stuff Mario plays as well. The reason the drumming is so pronounced is
because Joe and Mario are the combined songwriters. Same deal with Meshuggah; it's why the rhythmical
aspect is top notch in both bands. The music was written around the drumming! Or it sounds that way,
at least.
