lol WHBWH and AND sound nothing alike beyond the occasional climax-driven structures, and the whole point of this one is to be patient and morose - never thought of it as a prog album, even where it takes after Floyd, sounds every inch like a doom band transitioning to alt rock

Yeah idk, back when I heard WS I thought it just sounded like a less interesting WHBWH. This def sounds like prog rock to me but i hear the alt rock too. Not familiar with their doom stuff

Years since i listened to this. Time to revisit, best of their discog as it is.
|

oh WS is absolutely a less interesting WHBWH lol, although the bookends are probably the best tunes between the two
and I don't think the songwriting on this is prog at all, excepting a couple of tracks towards the end
|
| |
... and nope, not prog. Elevator doom in my book.
|

Hmm rym says that only "Wings of God" is a prog rock song. They also say that "Parisienne Moonlight" is neoclassical darkwave so be sceptical I guess.
Not very familiar with this album so I won't comment on those songs myself.

Been jamming this one hard this week. Really awesome songwriting from top to bottom. May be their best

Losing my brother recently to an "alcoholic shell" makes this album that much more special. What a wild ride from start to finish.

Ngl those lines still ruin me from time to time, was doing great all of January then anxiety and depression railed back in threefold now im transitioning back to having a problem. Alcohol is beautiful in moderation and even moreso horrific when it's a part of your lifestyle.

Baffling how massively ignored these were back in the day.
One Last Goodbye is some tune.

This is what I imagine Porcupine Tree would sound like if I could remember any of the multiple Porcupine Tree albums I've heard
Edit: how is one album able to be this mopey and this pompous at the same time?

that's all british goth bois for you lol

Chord progression and Danny’s lead work on the second half of Wings of God is perfection

GOATed album for me.

Danny Cavanagh’s collaboration with Anneke Van Giersbergen brought me here. And it feels nice. The gilmouresque solos are really heartbreaking. Now I feel stupid for having ignored them all these years.

Crushingly beautiful album, probably one of the most heavily loaded with emotion and significance of my life
WHBWH was the last album I enjoyed by the band. It has a lot of massive songs, especially a simple mistake. I hate get off get out but nothing else entirely wrong on that album
From WS I only ever listened the untouchables

I’d recommend checking out Beginning and the End, and Storm Before the Calm from WS. Those two tracks are incredible
