Back in the day, I used to see this as a sludge metal album, but now I'm realizing it's really more of an experimental rock album that just happens to be really heavy. Makes a lot more sense when you listen through that lens. The band creates a space where most anything could happen musically - I think they just happen to lean on rock instruments and general 'heaviness' the most because that's what fits best with the themes and the overall mood.
