it just sounds safe man, there's nothing to really grab on to it all sounds nice and everything but that's about it

That has to be one of the first instances I've ever seen where you actually talk about music and not just 123 someone else's remarks. And after calling this album pathetic, I gotta say that what you just said is a pretty safe comment

Swell review. I got this a few days ago. "The Other Side" is one of my favorites from this year.

I have to disagree that this is in the same vein as How I Got Over. That record did a great job in fusing the indie and hip-hop worlds together in moderation (still had its obvious flaws). undun takes that idea and basically throws it in the trash. This sounds like mid 90s jazzy hip-hop that's already been done by a jillion different people; I hear nothing that differentiates this from anything else.

Black Thought sounds like he's bored, Questlove's beats sound equally so. I mean, the whole thing sounds like a soul-ish hip-hop-ish jam session that steals the least interesting parts from either genre.

I hate to say this about a questlove production, but just listen to Make My. Seriously, listen to it. It sounds like my f*cking casio keyboard produced it, featuring Elton John

yaaaaa but they tried to make it darker or whatever idk

"safe" describes it p well maybe "uninspired" or "an album for the sake of an album"

i mean hats off to the roots for making an uninspired album sound this good

"The Otherside" is hands down the best track on the album imo.

The album takes a little bit to get into but has grown a lot on me recently. Starts out a little slow but I think that is because of the story behind the concept of the album.

"I hear nothing that differentiates this from anything else."

That's a really vague statement.

well yeah if you take the statement by itself but it wasnt by itself was it.

let's see what it says when you quote the whole statement:

"This sounds like mid 90s jazzy hip-hop that's already been done by a jillion different people; I hear nothing that differentiates this from anything else."

bit more informative. then you've got the next pseudo-paragraph:

"Black Thought sounds like he's bored, Questlove's beats sound equally so. I mean, the whole thing sounds like a soul-ish hip-hop-ish jam session that steals the least interesting parts from either genre."

hope that cleared things up!

I see what you're saying. I mean it's certainly no genre defining fresh sound that they're using on this record, but I guess what they did on these songs just sounds better to most than it does to you. Ain't nothing wrong with just having some good, chill sounding music.

The lyrical quality and how everything is tied together so strongly also makes it into something above average. A "jam session" wouldn't really flow this well, I don't think.

qwe3: I was referring to chambered's post; I hadn't seen the original one. Thanks for clearing that up though :P

i wasn't saying whether this was good or bad (its p much neither) i was just pointing out that it was unfair to say it was a vague statement. taking out clarifying information is obv going to render something vague.

and the record does flow but it's not something that really makes up for its weaknesses for me tbh. put it down to knowing the roots can do better or being disappointed in the beats/lyricism or the fact that the album's concept falls pretty flat and is probably not really suited to how black thought raps or whatever it just didn't do it for me and that other people have the same opinion for the same reasons kinda says something to me too.
